Blog Directories....Yes or No?

When I started blogging I have submitted all my blogs to directories...

.....now, I'm not sure I ever want to do that anymore.

It's great to get that immediate surge of traffic at the beginning, but I tend to believe that after a few months, I will be the one giving way more traffic to the directories (for the years to come) since my blog will have dissapeared on page 9326745826.....

So, I just do not want to bash directory owners, but why should I give a front page link to a directory when in return I will get on a far away page with most likely no PR or traffic?

Directories where good in 2005.....now with every Joe and Harry making multiple blogs on a daily basis, I believe it is not worth it anymore!

I feel you Globo and I OWN directories. They are great if the directories cater to a small niche but if they do not then they quickly get over ran,

Try finding the ones that sort on incoming hits and are old and matured. These ones have high PR on subpages and even on sub sub pages. For example adultblogspider.com , this one sorts on incoming hits, so when you send 1 hit a day your blog will be listed on category page which has PR4. If you send a fewer hits your blog is listed on category page 2 which still has PR2. If you can send hits then try getting in the toplist which is on the main page which is PR5. This way you are in control of where your blog is listed, when it isn't on a nice page then you can change it by repositioning the link to the directory.

And that is just one of the reasons, you can likely imagine a few more

I've been thinking about this myself, Globo. Thought about putting up a toplist like some do and rejected that idea. If only those with the most traffic get listed in the toplist it's not rewarding all sending traffic, even if it's one hit a day.

So I put up a referrer's script on Erotic Blog Directory with no limit on the number of referrer's that resets every 72 hours. If your blog sends even one hit you'll get a hard link on the front page.

I'll be working on getting this implemented on all my directories this week.

I created 3 blogs from the same free host in very similar fashion in consecutive days in late sept. I submitted 2 to a multiple directory submitter in A-B-C link trading fashion. When PR came only the one i didn't submit got ranked, and the other two had more Linkbacks and traffic.

While the two submitted didn't suffer terribly (they were created for keyword SE traffic) The first ranking #12 (for a less competitive keyword string), and the second ranking #25, the unsubmitted hits #3. Funny thing is that #25 is the same keyword string as #3.

Now there are way to many things that could have sent them their different ways, I'm just saying that its odd, and I decided (more so for the reasons globo mentioned quick hits, then none) not to use them any more. Not to mention I don't see any value in the traffic that comes from them.

I only post my feeder blogs and splogs to directories. The high quality ones don't need it

add a toplist to a sidebar near the top and then place hardlinks at the bottom. This will help with getting higher on directories that sort by incoming links.

And a few more, but they are younger blog directories. The above are 3 and 2 years old. But the best thing you can do is use http://www.adultblogresource.com/submitter/ and it will show you the special features for every single blog directory.

I set the number of referrals at 50, I think that's fair. In three days (the script resets every 72 hours) you should be able to send one or two hits which would at least get you up on the list.

If you send a couple of hits to each directory you'll get on the referrer's list for each one and that will put your blog link in front of a lot of surfers.

I like blog directories, at first I didn't hardly use them, now I submit to about 40 to 50 of them, they don't give the greatest traffic except for twan's, but they are good for se's

I've got my own network now, so I don't bother anymore. Plus, on average my blogs take 4-6 month before I see any sales from them, whether I submit them to blog directories or not.

I always submit my blog URL's to directories, but you do mention some very good points Globo!! Like twan said it's good to find ones that sort by incoming traffic and another good thing about the directories is that they accept links from freehosts which can generate some nice feeder traffic to your hosted blogs.

You know, with mainstream directories that require a link back, the link doesn't have to be from the main page. A link back from a links page is perfectly ok in mainstream. Makes sense too, since in the end, you'll be getting your backlink from a sub-page and not from the main page either.

I stopped submitting to directories a while ago (except to my own directories ).

I used to submit my blogs to blog directories, but I'm not doing that anymore for the reasons that globofun that everyone mentioned above :-)
The only blog directory in which I want to be listed in is Google and it doesn't require any recip :-)

You should _absolutely_ submit to any and everyone you find....IF you are on a free host.

If you have youre own blog... trade only with youre own blogs...everybody else will fuck you!

Just a suggestion badwolf, you might want to make a simple modification to the script (if its hosted yourself), so that it filters out 'google.com\ca', 'yahoo.com\ca' and 'msn.com\ca', so that they dont appear at the top.

I mean, its cool if you WANT it up there, but I see no point sending free hits out to google
