Should I nofollow?

SO I have thumbs on my blogs that either link to a FHG or a join page. I also have text links to the join page in all my posts. Should I be nofollowing these links or should I bother? Thanks!

Most of the time a fhg or join page isn't marked as bad by search engines, so you shouldn't have to add nofollow to them.

That's interesting. Do SEs view coded links as not real links? I guess I can understand them not rewarding the recipient of the links.

Can you be penalized for too many nofollows?

Can anyone tell me why is it offered as an option in Blog Automator?

Sponsor links DO get indexed by the SE's so they DO see them as normal links!

i always thought about adding a nofollow =]...never did tho..but great idea to limit outbound links...

but some directories/dumps, dont allow the no follow code at all...

yes but some directories/dumps do.

I wouldn't no follow links that are highly subject related to your topic, I think they help. If my sponsor page is all about big boobs and has nice keyword text rich boobs stuff that I am promoting and their title uses big boobs I wouldn't nofollow it. Its a hint about what my site is all about to the search engine. I think certain outbound links actually help. KEEP IN MIND this is just my theory, but it sure makes your site look like it is more in line with what the surfer is looking for. . . . .

but I would nofollow for certain sponsor links.
I've got a sponsor right now whose 2257 page is ranking high in a string word, why because people don't nofollow those links. I recommend that. Its a useless page that is up for its reason, but no surfer wants to go to the disclaimer.

Here's an interesting question, links to FHG and the likes contain keyword rich descriptions, which can help increase your overall keyword density and thus relevance in the SERPS as long as you don't overdue it right?
But what happens when you put in nofollow tags? Do the spiders still take those link into consideration keyword wise and just not crawl the pages they point to, or do they completely ignore them?

i guess because webmasters have requested this feature from kaktusan for that purpose. two things happen when you use nofollow on sponsor links:

- your hardlink trades get more juice because you have less overall outgoing links
- you prevent penalties that can come with linking to "bad neighborhoods"

I like to put nofollow attribute to sponsor links because of 2 reasons:
1. In this way I pass more PR juice to my hard link trades which are most usually my other sites
2. If we all give hard links without nofollow to our sponsors they will be better ranked in SERPS then us, which we don't want.

There are only 2 reasons why you would consider not putting nofollow tag to sour sponsor links but I don't see much benefit there:
1. You link to relevant sponsor so your site would appear more relevant to SEs. Since you can't put unlimited number of outgoing links on your site I think instead of that sponsor's link you can trade link with some relevant blog and get even more love from SEs.
2. Sometimes your link to sponsor with your affiliate code can be indexed and well ranked by SEs so you can get a lot of sign-ups from that, but I think it happens rarely and accidentally and probably don't last long.

I feel like an idiot . . . never even thought of that. If your trading partners and outgoing links are highly relevant, then there is little to no benefit from not using the nofollow on the FHG. Thanks

The recipient is rewarded when you link to them, you are actually also rewarded when you link to them, but only when the site you are linking to isn't bad. In general sponsors fhg/sites aren't marked as bad.

I would say no directory allows it, but if you read the first post carefully you would see that it is about links to sponsors not about links to directories or links to your linking partners.

nofollow is indeed a no go when it comes to blog directories / link trade partners.

yeap, some some even go as far as to ban any nofollow code, not only on their link. I know i have 2 directories like that, but ill see if there are more, because i like the nofollow idea
