wp-theme encodings issue?

Found those great wp-themes here on the board and translated one of them to German to use it here: Cam2Cam Chat Live Porno . Perhaps you know, in German we have special chars like ä,ü,ö and ß. The blog looks fines in a browser but when checking the site with a metatag-analyzer like Meta Tag Analyzer - all the special chars are fucked up....

Discovered this also on another blog and it seems like this happens everytime I put German language content on a template designed for English language.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Try changing the content-type meta tag of your template:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />

This one specifies which character set you are using on your blog. If you want to display german characters you need to specify a charset which supports those perky german characters.

That won't work because the database is UTF-8.

Meanwhile I've found kinda workaround by changing the collation of the db from utf_general_ci to latin1_german_ci and installing the wp plugin-o42-clean-umlauts which displays at least the umlauts on the posts the right way.

I am convinced this deals with something on the template itself and not with the database, because on that host I have another db with the same settings serving a wp with German wp-theme and everything is looking fine with that one....

I'm having issues when installing blog using Fantastico with code pages.
So for blogs that are not in English language I have to install them manually and than I have no problems with character encodings.

If you installed your blog using fantastico my bet that 99,9% that this is the problem.

When "installing manually" means to ftp-upload the files, edit the wp-config.php with
an editor and browse to the blog's base-directory in order to give it a name... then I
install all my blogs manually

Just go into your wp-config.php file and change this:

define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8');
define('DB_COLLATE', '');

to this:

define('DB_CHARSET', '');
define('DB_COLLATE', '');

Worked for me, hope this helps
