A couple of questions about social bookmarking

Hey guys, can you help me to understand the social bookmarking thing? I know they're good for getting a new blog indexed quickly, but I have a few questions:

Are all/any social bookmark links permanent?

How long should you submit your posts to them? The first ten posts for each new blog? The first twenty? Every post always?

How many should you submit to in the same day? Will too many links from these sites--or too many from the same site--adversely affect your google love?

Please excuse me if these questions have already been addressed elsewhere. I haven't been able to locate the specific answers and time's of the essence.

The idea behind social book marking is your surfers bookmarking your site.

You keep bookmarking your own stuff you won't get far, the other users on the social sites will see right through you.

That may be so, but I'm not in it for the traffic. It's my understanding that it's a good way to get some backlinks and get a new site indexed quickly. It seems to me that the other users on these 'social' sites--many of whom are NP members--are using them for the same purpose. Many thanks for the input, though.

I think the social bookmarking phenomenon is dead as far as se position goes. Might get you indexed faster but I see no other benefit now.

Some are permanent some aren't. Some actually give you a real link back some don't. If it runs on php code without actually listing your link in the source code. . e.g- using a link that looks like id=134578? instead of your actual url. . . to my understanding. . and someone correct me if I'm wrong your not going to see anything but traffic from that link. Well that is a choice of your time. If I had nothing to do I would submit every post. . you'll get more traffic and a few links from time to time. . but not the case. I recommend finding Rhete and checking out his submitter. I like it.

If its mainstream bookmarking . . .(e.g.-digg,reddit,de.licio.us,spurl,etc.) then you may run into some problems with it being accepted. You really need to sneak them into the diggs and sphinns of the world. If its just a bookmarking site (delicious, spurl, mr.wong, etc.) you can dump em all, and won't find too many problems.

Nobody knows for certain. . I'd say I am yet to see a major problem doing it and there are a few Social Bookmarking Demons who would probably agree. It really depends on your backlink structure. . .Google is so much more complex than most people give it credit. If you get 50 SB links in a day and you only have 50 links well that is different than if you get 50 SB links in a day and have 3,000 links. It works much more relative in my opinion.

There is no excuse for you Sister Mary . . now that will be 30 Hail Marys for your sins. . .and 3 slaps with the ruler. . . (Na, just Any excuse I can get to pull out my fav. smilie)

One more thing I am not in agreement that SB is dead, although too often you will see all or nothing claims. Its all about blogs, and TGP's are dead, or SB is worthless, trade links, or Get only A-B-C links the rest are shit. . etc.

I think its much more realistic to think in terms of balancing a link equation and using a variety of incomings to create what is a natural link building structure of a widely used strong site. People use recip. links all the time its natural. . people will naturally A-B-C link and people will naturally Social Bookmark as well.

Its definitely not the end all be all of linking, but I use it from time to time especially when a site is new. Just be sure to allocate only a small part of your time to using it.

Social Bookmarking (when done right) is probably one of the best ways to get deep links to your site. In fact, social bookmarking may be one of the best and most reliable ways to get one way links back to your site (which is far more valuable than most any link trade situation you may come across). I am totally in agreement with Dirt on the fact that I would submit every article. It is a very very time consuming endeavor but will be well worth it in the long run.

Contrary to statements made here regarding traffic to your site...try submitting to Social Sites like X-Digg and see how that works for you.

Thanks TheTiz. I had a look at it, and it's interesting. I'm wondering how many people would feel comfortable entering their email username and password, though. But the SB and 'add to favorites' might be useful.

Ya for sure. For what "we" need it for, it's really only good for the SB and "add to favorites" aspect. It's got all the SB sites in it already and it's got a pretty small footprint as far as what it looks like on a blog, so I figure, what's the harm?

This is true as many now are nofollow.

My opinion is the time spent social bookmarking could be better spent elsewhere. Submitting to blog directories will get you indexed.

Are all wrong, SB is not dead else why would Google offer 200 Million dollars for SB Giant DIGG ??? Why is that same SB Giant continually one of the top 200 Websites on the net, (for what 3 years + running). Come on now SB is not dead, it is just not used properly and to many wannabe sites thin the market, with poorly designed site (meaning using redirects, poor SEO, etc).
Also as we have stated many times on forums webmasters and SB submitters to not properly tag / keyword there post, making them harder to find by other users.

As far as these SB plugins, I will again note: DON'T USE a MAINSTREAM SB plugin on an ADULT SITE. While you may temporarily sneak a post in once and a while, when it is deleted and you are blacklisted all is lost (your backlinks, traffic from that site, etc). So when submitting adult only use ADULT SB plugins, or (in a shameless plug) try the X-Vote Plugin from X-Digg.

I hope all this makes sense, ran out of coffee this morning at the house, so I am just getting my first cup in now at the office. - lol
