Hope this helps WP SEO Plugin FAQ. Though this is the FAQ for the Platinum SEO plugin, it gives you an idea what it the SEO plugin basically does and what you can change.

Mainly you'll need to add your home titles, keywords and descriptions, etc. Studying a bit of basic SEO is the only way to understand what this plugin does and, the way to get the best out of this plugin.

I thought everybody who installs that and alike plugins leave the title/keywords/description on auto-generate. Not much of a point to install it other wise I guess.

All-in-one SEO for WP is an out of box plugin. Install and leave. Sometimes you have to upgrade. That's all.

You mean it should be writing the description and keyword metatags all by itself?

Unless we are talking about totaly different plugin types, yeah, that's the whole purpose. For example: the plugin may take the first 16 words of your blog post when you view a post, and generate a <meta> description with them. That is why I was wondering why people don't leave them on aut-generate mode, you can set static descriptions/keywords without the plugin anyway.

I'm talking about the All in one SEO plugin. When I write a post and expand the All in one SEO PAck, the description and keyword fields are blank, even though I have the autogenerate descriptions checked in the plugin settings (and I don't see an autogenerate keywords option there). That's why I thought I had to fill them out manually... so basically the only thing this plugin does is make up a description? and I still have to write the keywords myself?

If that's all it does I think I'm gonna uninstall it then...

That is for overriding the normal auto-generate behavior. For example, if your general site settings are to auto, but you want some specific meta on a specific post, you can override the auto by typing in the words in the post specific page. If you leave them blank, and your general site settings are set to auto, it will auto-generate - for example if you view a post it will generate description = first 160 words and all other meta.
Bottom line, it does auto-generate, but yes, you can override it in a per-post manner.

Ok thanks, all clear now (although I think you mean 160 letters, not words?). I did a test post and it indeed autogenerated the description tag, but not the keywords tag. But I think I'm gonna ditch this plugin and stick to writing my own, much better, descriptions.

Yeap, that would be letters, not words
As about keywords, they are generated from your post tags. You probably viewed a post with no tags.
It's up to you if you keep it or not. Keywords can be either hardcoded or dynamic generated by some code and since we are talking about wordpress, the simple way would be a plugin that executes on the WP header generator hook. If you don't like the currently available plugins (all-in-one is not the only one with this same task), you could tweak an existing one to suit your needs, rather then starting from scratch, I guess.

How would I do the auto-generate? I'm so confused I'm just about to drop this plugin

Well.. there were a couple of questions at the top asking you what plugin exactly you are using; you only mentioned it is not about the all-in-one seo plugin, which I run, so I couldn't predict how your setup interface looks like.
In all-in-one you don't have to do anything to auto-generate, you just leave the default settings intact as I remember.

No I am running All-In-One... What I said was I didn't read that one FAQ page that somebody had asked me about... Sorry about the confusing...

By the way... Mines not Auto-generating nothing... It stays blank all the time and I haven't messed with any settings as far as I know since I installed it.
