Alarmist domain name report by the Shanghai Daily

http://www1.shanghaidaily.com/art/20..._com_users.htm

Quote:
THOUSANDS of Chinese Websites registered overseas could lose their domain names next year because they cannot extend their services after the Taiwan earthquake that severed undersea communication cables.

Several domain name operators said on their Websites yesterday that ".com" services, which need to connect to the United States servers to work, will be virtually offline until the undersea cables are repaired.

Affected operators include now.cn, china-channel.com and bizcn.com, which are all major ".com" domain name service providers in China.
This is not strictly true, as services are availble at a reduced speed over the congested channels. It does highlight the fact that you shouldn't run your names up to the last minute before renewing. I posted this thread because some of you may know that I'm associated with China Channel, and I don't have problems connecting to them (but response is slow).

You can gain an idea of the connection problems by clicking the link to the Shanghai News in this post. If the connection was down, then you wouldn't be able to read that page.

Surely the month grace period will prevent anyone from losing their sites

Well there are two grace periods, the mandatory 30 day redemption grace period is the one where you pay $100 or so to get your name back. Before that there is an optional grace period granted by the registrar. At the moment it's a bit more than 30 days for me, and there is no penalty for renewals within that period. Other registrars may offer much shorter periods, especially if the name is valuable. Registrants may not notice that the name has expired if their mail box isn't working for some reason, and that's when the last day panic sets in.

I don't think they planned on communications with China.
We don't want their traffic anyway, and I thought everything went
Via the Bird and only through cable to a tower..
