I have been a domain miner for years. I could no way buy all the domains I have thought of, it wouldnt be about the money, it would be about what I would do with them. Keeping up with them is a real beast in itself, even though mine are in an excel file in alphabetical order with date of expire, host, and registar and what they are. tgp, blog, specialty site what ever. Do you think when they bought youtube did they really think? You utube u-tube yourtube urtube. Where does it end? I always go look when I am buying a domain, I only own one or two net domains, why should i build up a net and someone owns the com. surfers are stuck on com domains. dash domains can be just as good if not better than some without the dash kind of depends on the domain name x and x- are just about the same when it comes to se's. A lot of domains are taken by domain squaters. This mainly when I will pull a dash. Am I right in my thinking.. Beats me. What do you think..

I ended up with few .net domains because I got the exact keywords in .net.

.com is far better than other tlds. This reminds me of my unused domains. I need to atleast put some place holders on some doamins.

I buy domains when the feeling hits me, I mean if I think of a name or subject and research it a little, I usually buy, i do not have any hyphenated domains, no .nets and I had only 1 .org and sold it.

I don't buy domains for the SEs. It seems you can get ranked well for a search term with any old name. You should buy for type-ins, user memorability, and as an incentive for users to click. I reg'd www.make-me-an-offer.com to include in domain reg details, because I thought it was easier to read than a name without the hyphen. I've also got some .nets - they can help when you are promoting the .com, and who cares if the .com gets a bit of your traffic. It's a fair swop, because you are probably getting a lot more of his traffic by using his branding.

btw, one useful check for a domain name is to put the search term into Google, and don't forget to wrap it in quotes. If it throws up some sponsored links, then advertisers think the phrase can earn money. If you don't get any links, then you need to think about your reasons for wanting the name.

Whenever I have a new idea I'll go searching for domains and when I find them available, I grabbed them as fast as I can cos I once found a good adult name and went back the next day wanting to reg it, it was taken!

However, most of those that I grabbed without thinking are the ones I regretted most. Most of which were left undeveloped, just waiting for expiry.

Well, I usually go with .coms but lately I did bought few .nets and .infos... if domain name sounds good to me and if it fits in my niches and project, I will buy it... but, as you said, there is too much good domains out there and when you search for a domain name for some project or niche there are few of them always and you need to decide which ones to buy... in that situations I'm maybe too easy on buying all of them or much more that I can handle at the moment... same as recently with roxy riot, I found about 12 good names and bought about 8 of them, although I currently have time to develop maybe 1 or 2...

I always think now, back in the day I registered some crap with hyphens and .nets, I dropped them after a few years.

i always try to put a lil thought into it. Right now i am pausing on 2 possibilities just because of possible spelling differances (little vs. lil) One is reg'd and goes nowhere so the one i want will work?. The other name is also reg'd and redirected to a site that has NOTHING to do with the name. I am trying to figure out my best course of action.

I usually reg .net names when the .com name isn't competing with me or if it's a parked domain.....which I see a lot of. But generally I can think of names, good names, that aren't in use yet.

But sometimes it's worth getting the .net domain even if I am competing with the .com domain. I can still make money with it so what's the diff?

i try to think before i buy, but sometimes it's a matter of seconds before i hit the submit button and later i ask myself "wtf was i thinking?"... lol
