[NEWS] Samsung and small food company fight over internet name.

Samsung is claiming the domain name sens.co.kr. It looks to me like another case of a large company trying to monopolise common use words. Sens is also a town in France, which is not really relevant to Korea, but Samsung is international.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of computer memory chips, recently won a hearing at the country's Internet Address Dispute Resolution Committee which ruled that the domain name should be handed over to Samsung.
I would suspect a nice check written to that committee could get you a lot of domains

That was expected... small firms can't win against such a big companies, or that would be very very hard...

You would think a cutting edge company like Samsung would have all their TMs regged at conception anyway. I would have to side with the TM holder.

I don't agree with you. Just imagine that a double-glazing company owned windows.com. Should it give that up to Microsoft?

Was Samsung using that name in Korea when the domain was registered?

Most of these technology corps have so many patents and trademarks they can claim rights to your soul.

Well, you can't TM the dictionary term "windows". That's been the issue with several trade names which have become literally descriptive household words.

Google = 'search via google' (uncontested)
Xerox = 'to photocopy' (X is pissed but they have no luck enforcing it)
Kleenex = 'tissue' (Kimberly-Clark)
Pork'n Beans = Stokely VanCamp has given up and uses "Stokely's Finest"
BandAid = 'adhesive bandages' (Johnson & Johnson)

Adobe is bitchin' about 'photoshopped'! Without much luck.

No idea HB, I suppose or they wouldn't have TMd it. I dunno?
"Sens" had no meaning before it was adopted, other than a small nondescript town in France.

How about "olympic" then, that's been around for a few thousand years.
