[***] What's your first check on a dropped name?

When you see a name that you fancy on a drop list, what's the first quick check that you do? I use Google for a very quick evaluation.

Let's say you've seen OldPornMovies.com, then you can put the string "old porn movies" into a google search, and see what comes up -
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...porn+movies%22
in this case we get 4 paid links on the right, so the adwords guys think they can earn money from this string, and they are all porn links. Looking at the google count, there are "only" 23,600 pages, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get a good position. Another good thing is that all the SERP entries are porn related, so we shouldn't get too much flak about misleading surfers.

At this stage we are ready to try to estimate the number of surfers we might get, and a quick google listing for the domain name with extension will show some of the old links that are still active. Now for the important bit, you need to check the popularity of the search term, and there are quite a few tools around for that.

So what's your favourite quick check tool?

as you said, Google is great tool, after that Good Keywords to see search count, then some of domain name checker like dnscoop.com or smartpagerank.com to see some details about domain name...

Nope, I get 8 paid links on the right and even more by way of the 'sponsored links' link.

This does not mean 'old porn links' is their chosen term, they could have 'porn' or 'old porn' or 'porn links' or even just 'old'.

The power of Netpond - I'm getting more than 8 now.

I agree it's only a rough test, but given that many of the links contain "retro" or "vintage", I think it's a reasonable guideline. It's probably more useful as a warning when you don't get any links at all, but again, it's only a guideline.


Just out of interest, try "big hot boobs" and "big boobs".

Heh, I guess, quite reasonably, that 'big hot boobs' has less ppc than 'big boobs' 'cos they didn't target that at all.

Someone going for rather targetted searches there, when they could probably steal a few 'big boobs' impressions at a steal, EXCEPT that google fucking overcharges some search terms and then ends up with unfilled slots.

Last time I searched "big boobs", I got no links, this time I got 2. "big hot boobs" gives me 1, but gave me three last time.

I guess it comes down to expectations, and targeting traffic. "big boobs" is far too general a search. "boobs" also gives me 0 links, and boobs.com is worth more than reg fee.
