urban myth? re: buying domains?
I have read various information in a few places - thought I would ask the experts here...
For Example: I buy a domain from someone and that domain and their corresponding site has good page ranking from google for the keywords I want to target. Once the name change goes through and the whois changes - does google redo what ever google does? I have heard this is a yes from some and and a noway from others?? |

Ownership of a site is not what gives it a pagerank, however making changes to a site can affect the pagerank. So the actual answer to your site is yes and no. If you make absolutely no changes nothing should change, however no one buys a site and doesn't make changes, so there may be a change.
Google constantly indexes sites, so if it sees changes to something that has a high ranking it has to decide whether or not the changes change the nature of the site. But in basic, no google does not change a sites ranking based on whois, it will only change it based on content, links etc. __________________

Thanks for the info daedal. I didn't know most of that, but I'm always curious about people selling a PR2 site that has nothing on it...

There are loads of tricks that enable a page to appear to have a ranking, but in fact the page is just "stealing" the ranking from another page.
Buy domain names for traffic and inbound links, but forget about the concept of PR - it's meaningless. Even Google says it is "for entertainment purposes only". I believe it was just a con to persuade the gullible to install the Google spybar. ![]() Things that can affect the importance of a site are - the name expiring the name being deleted change of content variations in the number of inbound links Google's perception of the honesty of a site etc...... Change of ownership or hosting shouldn't be a factor unless it results in the domain being off line for some time. __________________

Theres no proof that google changes anything based on whois information or change of ownership.

Changing where a page is hosted COULD have an effect on the rankings if you use a shared host. Some of the incoming links would then be seen as same host links.
Other than that, I doubt you would take a hit. __________________
