godaddy: 19.95 US each just for updating .eu domain contacts

Well, I have my domains registered at godaddy and couldn't complain so far.
Anyway, a few days ago I updated my domain contacts because my phone number was displayed messed up.

I used the bulk update and suddenly a bill form popped up charging me with 19.95 USD for each .eu domain which I wanted to update. 19.95?! I contacted the support and they answered

Quote:
As previously stated, updating the contact information of a .EU domain initiates this charge.
Well, that's harsh. I didn't know that. I'm wondering, if this charge is a godaddy thing or if it's an official European Registry fee?

hm, didn't know about that too.

it looks to me like a godaddy's fee to cover expenses for changing your details in the EU registrar, but not sure.

hope someone around can give us more light on this..

Hm, I can register .eu through onlinenic, the price is 8.95 and the only wrinkle is that changing the domain contacts costs like a domain transfer (This is if you're not an EU national and are using their company as a proxy) But that's just another 8.95 not 20 bucks

Thanks for the response. I took a look at the Eurid fees meanwhile and they charge a fee for trades, but nothing about changing the contacts. Now the question is what they consider as trade. In the German version the Eurid says, "trade" is, when the domain owner changes. I mean updating the contacs is a basic right and also duty of each domain owner. That shouldn't cost something. I never had that before.

Hentaikid, I'm an European. So these contact costs wouldn't applay for me?

update. Found the English version of the Eurid fee list.
Quote:
Fees
The fees listed below apply to registrars only. EURid does not set the fees for .eu transactions involving individuals or organisations, such as registering a .eu domain name. Those fees are set independently by individual registrars.

Registration €4
Renewal (charged annually) €4
Trading a .eu domain name €4
Transferring a .eu domain name €4
Reactivating a domain name in quarantine €20

Reactivating and transferring a domain name in quarantine €50
Bulk transfers of domain name portfolios (minimum charge of €500) €0.25 per domain

I don't think so, with onlinenic it's only if you're using their British arm as a proxy to register for you, which you don't need if you're European.

So, looks like it's a bullshit charge from godaddy.
