Process of buying a domain of someone

Would you say this is the safest way:

1) Make offer
2) Seller agrees
3) Tell him to transfer the domain to my registrar under my name
4) Load files onto my server
5) Check that I have what he said he was selling me
6) Pay him.

Is that how it works, or are deals made slighty differently?

I'm always paid first when I sell a domain. There's a current wave of domain fraud going on where people use stolen Paypal accounts, buy domains and then the transaction is reversed. One of my dear friends lost some killer names that way. I still transfer right after payment unless it's a higher cost one, in which case I wait several hours until the transaction is secure.

To the best of my knowledge, the buyer usually pays first. Be sure and get good references though if the seller seems obscure and not known of as selling domains regularly.

Normally you have to pay as soon as both parties agree.

Okay lets say you buy a domain with content - say 2000 pages....

....this content will have all the guys affiliate codes and even after the sale he will be making money. So is it really worth buying sites since the time taken to change all the aff code is gonna take so long you might aswell build your own site.

Or can something be done about it?

if its a blog using WP there is a plugin that will remove his codes and replace with your affiliate codes...

also, if your unsure about the seller/buyer I suggest you use Moneybookers.com escrow service

I have purchased lots of domain names from Netpond sellers, you always pay first. If you are in doubt use escrow, I had to do it this way with a purchase at Sedo recently and its smooth enough.

I do the same way. I use sedo services. It is ok for me too

If the content is static or at least the URLs are, you can always preg_match/preg_replace or alike function to change all links in less then a second.
