Is it better to buy a new domain name for a search term?
My domain Pointenslutten the dot com seems to have gone to #1 in MSN, but hasn't made it onto any page in Google. Do you think that the long haul with a new domain name is better than quick results with a sub-domain/directory.

A new newbie
|
Thanks for this thread, HB! That's one I have been thinking about many times and still haven't found a real solid answer. I read pro's and contra's from both sides...
It's rather difficult for me to put numbers/values on either... If anyone can shed some light on this, I hope it gets copied to the "newbie tutorials" too! |

My feeling about it is that a new domain is useful in at least two cases. If the site is here for the long haul, ie. more than 2 years, and also if it's getting type-ins (or old links).

It looks as if it has made it for a few days. It just shows that a well chosen domain name is still a powerful tool for gaining good traffic.

You're right Blinky - the name is just one factor.
Even though many of the keyword domains have been registered already, some of them are dropping every day. One of the things that we can discuss in this forum is the different ways to catch them. __________________

Well I always think of the long haul when buying a name, and I almost always try to go with key-word.com style domains. I dont have any real hard facts to back up for this decision, except that when I surf the net and Im looking for free horny milfs and I come across the page free-horny-milfs.com I think the page has more to do with free horny milfs than a domain like superxxxfreeporn.com/free-horny-milfs/ for example
So right or wrong thats how I have been choosing domains, but thats why Im reading the threads in this forum to learn more about what goes into choosing a domain name and why? ![]() __________________

I think you are right msanchez - it's no good being number one in google if you've got a crap and obviously spammy entry that nobody will click.

I thought I would bump this to continue the discussion about using single word domain names for good SE positioning. pointenslutten - the dot com seems to be holding up fairly well despite a quick and amateurish page structure by me.

Maybe this is off topic, but how long does it take to get out of the "sandbox"?

Google seems to do some strange things and vary the rules to keep the SEO guys on their toes. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't throw in some random promotions just to confuse them. I still haven't worked out why www.HeadBoy.com is 2nd out of over 15 million pages for the word pair "head boy"
