Real story on GoDaddy please. Is it JUST $8?

Could someone tell me if GoDaddy.com sells you the domain name for $8 and doesn't try to sell you hosting and other services for an inflated fee to make the domain name cheaper?

I have hosting and I have the whole email set up, but I need a domain name fast. Obviously, I don't want to pay $30 for another domain name, but I don't need the rest of the package either. is his possible with GoDaddy.com?

i think it's actually $9 but yes, that price doesn't require you to buy anything else.

namecheap and registerfly are good alternatives, so is headboy.

$8 then add the icann tax puts you at like $9 but if you avoid all the promotions you really do get the domain for the advertised price.

There are quite a few registrars at around the $9 mark. I charge $8.95 via Money Bookers or 900 Netpond points for .com or .nets.

$6.95 is about the cheapest you'll find a domain name for and anyone selling it for that cheap isn't making any money. Last time I checked (I use to offer domain sales through my old webhosting company) the cheapest you could get domains to sell off was $6.95.

GoDaddy doesn't make much on their domain sales (a couple bucks.. Count in support costs, etc. Might not even be positive income), they make all their money off selling you the value added services. Headboy might be able to explain a bit more since I haven't sold any domains for almost.. Hmm 2 years?

Same thing is happening to the hosting market. Everyone wants cheaper and cheaper hosting with more and more features. Only way to keep a profit is to overload servers or sell value added services into the package.

I like registerfly, and they have frequent offers for $7.95 registrations if you're a member.

A registrar has to pay $6 to verisign for a .com registration. If he sells for less than that, he has to make up the money somewhere else. I'm an authorised re-seller, so I have to pay slightly more than $6, but I make enough from an $8.95 sale, so I don't have to hunt for extra income from it.

I'm not sure what forwarding you need, but most decent registrars will provide you with free tools to forward URLs and emails. I use this as a simple method of "parking" domains without requiring additional hosting.
