Is it better to buy a name or register one yourself?
I'd be interested to hear other people's opinions on this. Google seems to give a bit of preference to names that have been on the net for a while, so it would seem to be better to buy a name that's in the zone. If the premium isn't too high, it could save you a bit of a wait while you climb out of the sandbox.

If you can get a name that's been around for awhile that was targetting the kind of traffic you're looking for and isn't penalized by the major SEs then I'd say buy it.
I believe you can simply redirect to your other domain without SE penalty. If not you can always create a page on the bought domain that will entice them to your other site. If the site has any of your keywords that rank well on the SE I'd try to get a copy of the page from an SE cache (or archive.org) and put it in the same directory structure structure as the original site. |
