how long do you register a domain for

Just wondering if everyone does just a year or two or goes for a longer registration.

I have a few domains comming up for renewal and was thinking to register them for 10 years but wanted to hear what you all are doing.

Thanks

Some people think that there is an advantage with the SEs if a domain has a long registration period. They may believe that the domain is permanent and more significant, but I haven't tested this theory.

One year, @HB: I think that's just going to come and hasn't really been implemented yet, maybe by Google, but if it was implemented, then it's only valued a little bit

What's probably more important is to make sure it doesn't expire. The safest option is to renew your domain before it gets to the last 30 days of it's life.

Mine are all on auto-renew with Enom, so I don't need to worry about that

You should still check to make sure that they have been renewed. eNom got some bad press recently about grabbing high value names when they expired, instead of allowing the usual 30 days grace period.

Thats exactly why I was asking this question. Looks like I will be the guine pig and go for a 10 year registration and see if it affects my SERPs or not.

Thanks all for the replies

Time on the net seems to be more important than registration life. I've noticed that several domain buyers are looking for surplus names to buy before they expire and drop. In fact this is one reason why I started to put Netponders surplus names on www.pendingdeletion.com - it gives the owner a chance to make a few dollars from the name, and the buyer a chance to get the domain off to a flying start.

So far I seem to be the only buyer on my site though.

I totally agree with this.

my theory is that with doing a registration for a longer period than the standard registration of a year or two will give the impression of being a long term "real" site in the future.

Kinda like a roofer putting liscensed - bonded - insured on his business card.

It looks nice and gives the impression of being a professional "real" company but really doesnt mean all that much.

I figure at the very least it couldnt hurt to register a domain or two for a bit longer and see what happens.

Ill let you all know if there is any difference as I havent been able to find anyone who has ever really tested this.

Thanks for the replies

I read that one of the criteria that Google takes into considertion when ranking a website now is on how long the domain is registered Kamilla.

If I get time today I will try to find where I read that but it wasnt here on the Pond I dont think.

Ooh hang on I think it may have been a lik that haiu posted recently about Google.
