Is Bush going to cause the US to lose control of the internet

European internet registries are preparing a fight-back against the US government following the latter's surprise decision to keep overall control of the "root zone file" that defines the internet's basic set-up.

Despite an increasing number of newspaper articles - all from US media organisations - claiming that the internet community is happy to let the US government continue its role, a recent meeting of registries from across Europe begs to differ.

Instead, those registries have agreed to build, test and install a new automated system for changing vital infrastructure information, thereby removing the US government's ability to meddle in the process.

Bush has just made a mistake... You don't know which DNS registrant has on of the leading role in industry... And you don't know which registrant has extreme increasing in new sales... 1&1 - this is their name, and they are bassed in UK. German firm... This means Europe... Lucky me, I'm also here...

Bush has gone too far on thinking he can censure internet... Bush, GFY!

Well, the us can control the net in the same way China can... within it's borders. If it gets really bad, the same domain will point to different sites depending on your physical location. But I don't think it will come to that

But many people are saying that 2257 is important because the US controls the root servers. If America no longer controls the root servers, then surely 2257 is irrelevant as US w/ms will just outsource their sites.

i'm all for no gov managing the root servers but i wouldnt go as far to say 1&1 is the registrar to content with...

they are increasing but most registrars are. also isnt 1&1 the registrar having icann issues due to not transfering domains out?

head boy if the US webmaster outsoruces it then they will have to have a address out of the US to receive checks as i understand it is not just where your servers and such are located but where you live that applies for 2257

Outsource is probably the wrong word to use. If the US residents are shareholders and employees of an non-US company, then my understanding is that 2257 doesn't apply to them.
