Might be better to buy old names or sites from others. I don't think it'd be too hard to find some old names or sites pretty cheap. A domain registered for longer than a year probably won't have quite the same effect, but some.

I've been trying to get people interested in buying names that are in the last couple of weeks of their life, but I don't seem to be able to generate any enthusiasm. It seems that they would rather wait until names have lost all their benefits, and try to grab them on the drop (and usually miss). It's much better to give the current owner a few dollars and have a comfortable transfer.

The main consideration for me has been the fact that you don't risk losing it, but there does seem to be a benefit in keeping the domain off the delete list.

I've no idea if it makes a difference reg'ing for one or two years. I'm a cheap skate, so I always reg for one year.

I think too, if said domain was actually managed, it's prolly got a few listings in SEs, so if you pick it up before it expires, you can at-least get some 404 traffic, and build upon the SE stats

I doubt google (or any major SE) is going to penalize you for having short registration periods on your domains.

The speculation came from the 'google patent' a few months ago, where it was mentioned as a way to identify quality sites - spammy sites generally are used for a year then dropped as they get blacklisted, but quality sites are registered many years in advance.

If you mean domains that have been registered for a while, then a lot of people have been talking about the 'sandbox effect' where your site supposedly will not show up in the google SERPs unless you've been online a few months. Better to wait it out than spend money on an extra domain IMHO.

Thats the one
so is it worth regestering your domain for more than a year if its a new domain never used

sandbox is usualy 3 to 6 months but there are ways around that
so if i buy a domain it should already be out of the sandbox
but again would it be worth regestering for a longer period
so its not classed as a spam site
