Domain Name Ownership!

We all refer to getting a domain name as buying it....but we don't actually buy it because I've never received a receipt for it or any paperwork saying it is MINE! What I would like to know is, why can't we buy a domain name?

Actualy, that disturbes me greatly too. I wouldn't mind paying 5 times the current price if I would be certain it would NEVER expire...

But I guess that's how money rules, keeping the customer dependant will make faaaar more money than making a big one-time-deal.

Domain "selling" companies make money from the inventive idea's of their customers, selling them names they would never have been able to think off themselves... it's jsut a big scam but we depend upon it so we can only buy it at the cheapest place possible that hopefully won't screw us.

It's the same with transfers of domains... why do we have to pay "them" to make a deal between "us"?

It is just odd, who decided it and who's the governing body that manages it all?

You can only "own" a lease on a domain name. This is because the IP resolution has to be done by a central authority, and the ownership data base has to be maintained. The annual fee covers the cost of this. Strictly speaking "buying" a name is the purchase of the lease from another owner. You don't buy a name when you pick up an unregistered one.

ICANN is the governing body. Verisign manages to .com and .net registration data bases.

remember when we had to pay 100 for a 2 year reg?
But back then we could reg the name get a month out of it looking to see if there was type in traffic and then cancel on the bill

internic was the only place to get a name too

Ummmm no lol I just wouldn't have the time to do a 420 site up right hell i got to many names now and i still find myself buys more all the timie i think its time to start selling some of my names

If you list them here, they get put in the monthly sticky as well as in your thread. If you are listing several though, please can you run them in one thread rather than starting individual ones.
