On-Hold (Pending Delete)

Assuming the domain I'm looking at was 'expired' on the 15th of August, how long till it becomes available to register again ?

Pending-Delete means it will become available after 5 days, on the 6th day.

21st in this case.

btw, that assumes it entered pending-delete on the 15th...how long from expiration to being able to register it varies by registrar because the length of time its in registrar-hold can vary. so you're looking at ~37-82 days.

the expiration date and the day it entered pending-delete are two different things.

Add it to your watch list in whois.sc - you won't beat an automated registration system, but it might give you an edge against a human.

Beats checking the whois every day at any rate
