Redemption period - when will this domain drop?

Check this out from whois.sc:

Registrar: TUCOWS INC.
Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net
Referral URL: http://domainhelp.tucows.com
Name Server: COBRA.SIMPLECOM.NET
Name Server: NS2.SIMPLECOM.NET
Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 21-sep-2005
Creation Date: 11-aug-2003
Expiration Date: 11-aug-2005

Now, this particular domain expired 11 Aug and I REALLY REALLY want it

I thought redemption period was 30 days, then 5 days pending delete then it's available. Why the hell is it still in the redeption period in october?

Any thing I can do to make sure I snap it up the minute it gets deleted? I try every single day about 3 times to register it but it says its still taken

Most reputable registrars have a grace period of around 30 days before a domain goes to redemption. This is because they don't have to pay Verisgn for renewal until then. They hang on to it in the hope that the owner will renew (and many do).

You should also check to see if it really is in redemption or if it is in a fake redemption so that the registrar can sell it for a profit.

no you haven't, not redemption period...redemption period lasts up to 30 days, but is almost always 30....it's never more.

Hmm ok. SO basically the registrar hung onto it for a bit of extra time and now that it is in redemption it should be dropping.

Head boy how can I check if it's in fake redemption or whatever it is? There isnt a webpage loaded on it at all...

Whatever, it was either redemptionperiod or pendingdelete, but whatever it was the registrar held onto it until it was sold to someone else.

That's a mock redemption. Basically the registrar renews the name on his own behalf, and then runs it through the same time period as a normal expired name. When that time has elapsed, he then sells it to the highest bidder. He does this because the name is still legally the property of the registrant until it gets to "pending delete".

Registrars are messing around with the descriptions a bit, but if the name is not out of the zone, then it's not in a true redemption. "out of the zone" will give you a dns error if you try to access the site.

this is a domain lifecycle chart i found http://www.wsmdomains.com/help/wsm_d...life_cycle.jpg

afaik, enom and godaddy are the only ones who have done this "extended redemption grace period" thing..but even that isn't 6 months

There is a bit of variety between registrars in the way that expired names are handled. Maybe I ought to do a chart.

Ok cool, well that's good news then. There are no "A" records for the domain so hopefully it is in the true redemption period! Fingers crossed, I want this damn domain!
