where do you guys buy your old domains.

like one that was registered before 2000 and expired?

That's actually a pretty complex question to answer. A domain name is only available for an annual rental, so when one drops, it's technically the same as one that has never been registered. Of course a dropped name can have links still live on the net, and may be in a number of blacklists, but that's a different consideration.

You also need to differentiate between expired names and dropped names. An expired name is one that hasn't been renewed, and will have to go through a drop cycle of around 70 days before it becomes available again. During that period it may be renewed by it's owner, or it may be claimed by the registrar - in either case you don't get a chance to grab it.

You can register these names through any registrar when they become available. Lists of expired, dropping and dropped names can be seen on a number of sites. www.deleteddomains.com and www.whois.sc are two that are widely used.

i want to grab some mainstream oldies in several areas
that had traffic and were indexed.
i understand that for seo purposes it helps to have a veteran domain name.

That really only works if you can get them before they hit "pending delete". The SEs can get the lists as well, and they can drop links and stuff if they see a name on them.

You can buy an expired name from it's existing owner using a technique known as a registrar push, but it does need the current owner to agree to the transfer. I think it's worth trying to contact the owner and try to get the name before it hits redemption, but not all owners will bother to sell to you. The classic example is the name Microsoft dropped. It was caught by snapnames and auctioned for $160k. There's a recent thread about it in this forum.

If you need any help with a registrar push, then just start a thread in this forum. Don't mention the domain name though, there are a lot of pirates in the domain world.

I can get ya Awesometeens.net which was registered in april 2000
and was used for TGP galleries and still get's traffic if ya interested..
Can also get ya Mafiahit.net registered April 2000
