Broadly speaking yes because you'll pick up traffic from the .net. I'll qualify that though and say it depends on the name and the site on the .net. If the net is a parking page, then it probably won't generate much traffic. Another clue is the length of time it's been registered. If the current owner renewed it, then he's getting some benefit.

Well some people prefer .net, and some think it is better for certain sites - hosting and isps for example. It used to be the bloggers tld, but that has changed over the last couple of years I believe. It may be that the com was registered and has dropped, and the net owner doesn't know.
