Cybersquatters Try New Tactics

the domain name of a celebrity and selling it for a king's ransom was one of the great get-rich-quick schemes of the early internet. But since courts now tend to favor the star over the squatter, a new kinder, gentler cybersquatting tactic has emerged.

These days, cybersquatters seek to register a star's domain before that person becomes famous, and then develop a business relationship with the new celebrity, offering website hosting or design work.

These so-called soft squatters are registering the domains of hundreds of amateur athletes, musicians and other would-be stars in the hope that one or two of the names will become well-known.

I'm not sure that it's completely true that a celeb will automatically get the name. It can depend on a few other factors - for example if (s)he has ever owned it and let it drop, then that is evidence of a lack of interest and an application will fail. Of course, there could still be trade mark issues.

I've been tempted to do that myself a few times. Peterweller.com was free a couple of years ago when I checked. It's squatted now, I probably should have bought it

A lot of artists I know don't have their domains registered, I really should get them before someone else does.
