Hey, people, I've noticed all lot of people here on Netpond also do mainstream sites and visa versa. I guess its part of the diversifying idea.
I was wondering what you would think about this:
Before I started doing Adult sites, I used to fool around with personal sites just for fun and to keep myself occupied seeings as I'm not allowed to work.
I have a personal site for my cat on a free host right now, I haven't developed it since doing the adult, but it does get some traffic, I only have 1 ad I think, maybe too.
Anyways what's your opinion , should I try to develop this site as a real mainstream site. or forget it and try something else.

Yeah man, diversifying is great, after making my site that I'm working on now, I plan on starting some sort of mainstream, and see how that goes..

Diversity is a good thing. If you want to develop around your cat site might not
be a bad thing. Pets is a huge field. Pets training, pet supplies. You could start by
selling some affiliate products involving cats on the site. Clickbank is always a good
place to find things to sell. I believe there is a site out there where people can upload
pics of their pets and other people vote on them.

Yea, you should ..... but i think you should pick a side in the beginning.
Start with making money with adult first or start with making money with mainstream.
So lets say you pick adult, focus on that and make money.
Then you can now divert to mainstream later.
You cant kill 2 birds with one stone.

The biggest issue is you're used to 50% revshare from adult and mainstream pays 2-10% revshare.

I have some experience being a mainstream webmaster and i agree with what pam is saying. You will notice that mainstream pays a much lower revshare compared to the adult industry.

With mainstream however you some top end CPC networks such as adsense, yahoo etc

Id suggest picking a niche that you enjoy and starting up a content based website.

I have some mainstream sites and some make money, some haven't yet. As someone said on another board, if a site makes $5 a day, that's $1,800 a year -- 10 sites doing that ain't bad

Mainstream will bump you up for good sales. One of my sponsors actually called me today to tell me they would bump me up to 8% (WOO HOO) instead of the 6% I was being paid, to say thanks for the sales. It's not a lot but if I continue to do well, hopefully they'll keep bumping me up

On the other hand the conversion ratios are much higher. Some guys had a blog for their cat who liked to kill things and bring them to them, so they posted every day with updates and photos of what the cat had murdered... got fairly popular

I would definitely look into the mainstream side of IM (internet marketing), i make more money now in mainstream then i ever did in porn and i wasn't doing all that bad in porn.

But be prepared its a whole other ballgame then porn and a big learning curf, but there is also a lot a money to be made.

I agree with what Pam and Hentaikid have said. You have to get used to the idea that the commission/revshare rates are much lower in mainstream, but because you have a much wider audience the conversion ratios can be much higher.

If you have a topic you're interested in (perhaps cats/pets?) look for suitable available domain names and then work on content.
If you have no real preference, brainstorm a variety of key areas (cars, health, pets, food, consumer tech, etc.) and pick one to develop.
