OpenX - How Do I Do?

This thread is going to be dedicated to answering all those simple questions and tasks that we face when we are new to OpenX, the newest version of what was first was phpAds, which transpired into OpenAds, and is now called OpenX

This thread is intended for when you get stuck and have a problem or question.

Let me add that it is not difficult to learn...once you understand the basics.
Once you understand more it can be a powerhouse and as well time consuming.

ok, so I am probably going to wear this thread out...

here is first dumb question - i get this errror msg in my admin settings - i have tried changing the permissions on the ones i had to unlock to install and then script wont run - which files exactly need to be locked?

"It is possible to edit all settings because the configuration file is not locked, but this could lead to security issues. If you want to secure your system, you need to lock the configuration file for this installation."

I would think it would be the phpadsnew.inc.php file.

OK - so am just overall struggling with the concepts here and think it is because the program is written more for those selling ad space...

can anyone explain please what the different descriptors are in our language as the semantics are killing me.

For my example I have:
- 5 blogs I want to place ads on, in four spots - two sidebars, footer, money bar.
- Will feature 3 sponsors - two with just one link and one with 6 links
- Each sponsor has sq banners, horiz banners and text ads.

So each blog is a publisher - right?
then each sponsor is an advertiser - right?

then I get confuzzled... between campaigns and zones.

so a campaign is a set of ad tools - banners and text ads that go with advertiser(sponsor) - right?

and then a zone is a place on site to advertise and size? - like sidebar/sq banner??

then a channel is a group of zones????

i am so confuzzled

Great thread and great tool. I just got the hang of openx yesterday even though I'm a super newbie with it still I've got it running a random Gallery Of The Day on one of my blogs. I'm sure I'll run into something sometime down the road so I'll be check back here a lot.

I've just installed openx and it wont track clicks. I generate a javacript code which displays the banner fine and counts the impressions but there is no click tracking. I have ticked the box that says 'enable click tracking'

anyone got any ideas ?

yes - like four times!!!!

i just need to figure out the semantics i think- most of the help part is geared toward running ads for specific timelines and click costs and such. I think now I concentrated so much on it, that I have made it wayyyy to complex in my brain.

firstly, you need events for statistics...
also when you use 3rd party "click tracking" it corresponds with your media

Hmmm can you clarify here please dave. By 'events for statistics' do you mean I need people visiting my ads? If so I have already uploaded and ad and been visiting it myself. I see impressions but not clicks. The link displayed is exactly the same as my the html. Normally ,in openads, the link is reconstructed so as to run thru the script and thus count clicks. That's not happen in my case.

wondering if anyone knows this about adding banners?

I am just setting up some advertisers, I will be hosting the banners that are their ads (I dont want to hotlink). These are affiliates with banners - so I am setting up a ton of banners.

Right now I go to their site, click on the banner, right click, view image - right click - save image and save image to my harddrive. Then I use FTP program to upload the image to: httq://wwiw.mydomain.com/banners-ad1/banner1[dot]jpg

then...

to add the banner to a i go to add a new banner and choose external banner and then cut and paste the url to image URL...

this is a bit tedious and seems like there should be better options

on the add a new banner screen under please choose the type of banner it gives you the option of local SQL or local banner webserver and when you choose one of those options it just says "browse" and clicking browse shows me my hard-drive - is there a way to make it so i can link to my hosting and see the banners there and choose them?

You can upload, serve and host all your banners internally with OpenX.... local sql

publisher/www/admin/banner-edit.php?clientid=1&campaignid=1

Please choose the type of the banner "Local Banner" SQL

importing lots of banners in openads/x is tedious. welcome to bulk importing

when you browse your hd, openx controls where hte banner is served from, either from the database - inppropriately called sql, or from the webserver as a file (which it uploads it to a certain directory).

am actually starting an advertising company and think this will come in real handy.... I am setting this up today and will be working and fooling around with it over the next week or two....

Does anyone here use it to sell ad space with?? or do you all just use it to keep track of your campaigns??

I am trying to add a MOTD Freeclip to my blogs serving it with openx.

I created the console on my VOD site and that gave me some HTML. If I just paste that into the text widget on the blog it works. But I want to use Openx to serve it -I created it as an HTML banner - and posted the invocation code in my text widget. The clip displays fine, but clicking on it brings me to an error page?
