Should the internet be regulated?

Me and a co-worker at my day job are having a discussion about whether or not the internet should be regulated. She argues that regulation is needed in all things in order to keep the extremists in check. My argument is that the internet has been one of the greatest successes of our time because of its limited regulation and has thus grown at a phenomenal rate.

What are your thoughts on this? I'm interested in hearing both sides.

isn't it already regulated ? there are laws that apply to internet activity just as they apply to "real world" activity, what more do people want ?!

No it should not, it always brings in some sort of censorship and i don't think that is the right way to go, and it is already regulated by the law of the country you life in.

But if you do want it to regulate ho is that going to that that then? the USA?

Regulation of content is really just a fluffy bunny term for censorship. I suppose if the speech is inherently criminal, it is already regulated (cp, content theft, fraud). I sort of view keeping speech "in check" as an extremist position.

I would prefer to have an internet totally free of regulation. More regulation just give politicians one more thing to fuck up

I honestly believe that more villains and sex offenders have been caught and prosecuted because of the Internet. Undercover cops and law enforcements sniff out the bad eggs...

I agree with the position that the internet is already regulated enough depending on which area you reside in. I see no reason to allow the government (or other governments) to get their grubby hands into it and screw this great creation over.

It's already regulated enough.

There's always going to be people calling for regulation, they need to get a grip and think about what the future will be with more and more regulation not just now.

I agree that some regulation is needed, but many want to take it to far and completely censor everything. Expecially porn which definatly would not be good for the industry

Censorship is not regulation and thats the problem. They start of by saying we need to stop so and so, but to stop it we have to watch what you are doing.

Regulation should be only in order to stop extreme things that the majority of the world agree is illegal, so that includes cp, terrorism and so on.

It doesn't need any more regulation than is currently in place, there is enough laws to stop illegal activities involving the net so no more is needed.

I would argue that if speech is regulated which is not directly related to the articulable harm of another, then that constitutes censorship. CP is illegal and immoral because it is an artifact of chi ld sexual abuse... Plotting a terror activity should be regulated because the intent and end is to cause harm to innocent bystanders... Piracy can be morally regulated because it harms the intellectual property interests of the legitimate owner.

The problem with regulating "extreme things that the majority of the world agree is illegal" is the changing and arbitrary definition of what is "extreme", 40 years ago anal porn was extreme, should that have been regulated? What if the majority of the world doesn't want me to develop jesusiscuming.com or whatever because it is "extreme"? May I then be censored?

It should just self-regulate and not have any more restrictions than the country the domain happens to be hosted in. You can't regulate the internet in other countries.
