how do you get traffic for your mainstream site? any tips? we all know about porn... but what about a new mainstream site? how do you fire traffic at it?

(p.s i think we should have more discussion in the mainstream forum as there is money to be made in that other 1.25% of the internet, so some-one once told me)

I think the main traffic should be from SEs

You can also use images (ecards) to draw your audience and get some viral growth happening.

Traffic from SE is the best. Link exchange is good too because you can get traffic from those links and you improve your PR.

I search for link trades and get a few trades, and then I submit my site to some ffa (non adult linkdumps) to get the traffic going and hopefully get picked up by the SEs.

ALL my signups are from SE traffic and MOST of my signups from SE traffic coming from the deeper pages as far as Page 90!

In fact, the deeper a surfer searches into the SERPs, the more likely they are to be on a serious mission to find what they are looking for - these folks are the positive opposite to the average TGP (freeloading) surfer.

That is definately great to hear. I am planning to take my first babysteps in mainstream this summer, but I'm a little intimidated by how hard I have imagined it must be to get traffic.
While the adult market is probably just as cut-throat and saturated (probably often more), there are several methods that makes it easy to get thousands of hits right from the get go (generally low quality traffic of course, but it can still make you money if the numbers are high enough), and I don't see anything similar in mainstream.

I'm hard at work at the moment improving my SEO skills with adult blogs and similar ventures, but I imagine it may be quite a bit harder to rank high in the SERPs on most mainstream keywords, since you probably have fewer synonyms and alternative keywords to rely on compared to the more "colorful" language in the adult business.

Well, I'm going to give it a shot for sure - I'm not really expecting to see it pay off for the first months anyway.

Directories on the web are a very important aspect of website traffic.
They not only send you traffic directly but they also create paths to your site that search engines can use to locate you.
