Anyone using amazon associates?
There seem to be a lot of wordpress plugins for this program so I signed up, will try it on some of my mainstream blogs since google adwords is a bit underwhelming.
Any advice? |

I haven't done any serious promotion of specific books, but I have used Amazon ads for relevant books on mainstream sites about politics or sustainable development, and gotten zero sales... but the amazon ads do a pretty good job of reporting statistics on visitors.
My mainstream projects probably need more traffic. I would seriously consider doing a book review site that had amazon ads if I had enough time to read new books. But then dealing with the publishers might make more sense in getting review copies, money to afford co-promotional advertising in print media, in essence becoming a bookseller would be the direction I would go with that. Selling books is a tough business... |

I know that Amazon sells all sorts of things and provides a few services, as well, but Amazon = books is still pretty true in my mind, and that linkage probably exists in the minds of lots of other internet consumers. Before I got involved with the internet, I had a small direct marketing business selling technical/specialist books in biology. I had some friends with fairly successful business along those lines, as well. It is a tough business. Selling books as an affiliate seems to remove the risk of having to maintain any inventory, but a lot of publishers would allow you to drop-ship from their warehuses anyway, but they cram their packages full of their own marketing material and steal your customers. It probably is worth figuring out how to get promotional fees or similar from publishers in addition to any cut from actual sales from your affiliate program. Attending some sort of <a href="http://www.bookweb.org/">American Bookseller's Associaton meeting would be one way to meet publishers with those kinds of perks. __________________

I'm really not at all sure why the idea of selling physical goods is so appealing, you get a small percentage of the sale price, no recurring and traffic is hard to get, almost any subscription or service type referral is both easier to get and more profitable, but still...

I used to do a lot of sales with Amazon, before Google and contextual Ad's, Amazon were the best thing for niche mainstream traffic. With good targeted results and before Amazon had all the crap on there pages I used to see regularly a 1/5 conversion!. Conversions were better than anything I have used, I put it down to targeted traffic, a branded site, and an easy check out system. However the % you get is so low even at 1/5 it is very hard to make money. When AdSense come about I went thru all my Amazon sites changing out the banners and increased my income tenfold overnight.
I still have a trickle of traffic on pages I have not updated/changed in more than 3 years, the stats are still very good 1/100 3887 1.03% 40 40 $25.03 Back when drops were all the rage I picked up a hydroponics domain, no guess in what the traffic was looking for, and it was not how to grow tomatoes! Amazon was a good place to land the traffic http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=...o.x=10&Go.y=12 Amazon even have book for kinky adult fetishes that no one has, or wants to have sites for: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/188...938534?ie=UTF8 |

ha ha a novella about fisting starring a newbie and a "wise mentor", that's a good one. The wisdom of the fist indeed.
I got interested in amazon reading a blog about a guy who used to work for them and built his own affiliate sites to the point that he could quit his job, but since he used to work with them I guess he has an intimate knowledge of their API for building dynamic automatic sites... not the kind of thing I can pull off. |
