Hi Guys and Gals,
I been looking through a number of online resources and just about everyone seems to have, "The secrets to search engine optimisation", is half of this just a load of bull or is there some truth behind this? Everyone seems to have there own do's and don'ts. Just wondering if there are any short cuts etc. or is it just down to hard work and effort? Nathan21 |

Hi Nathan21,
a good start for SEO is building your sites for surfers and not for SE spiders. Don't spend your time to much on SEO. Good content and clean HTML will do a good job. ![]() __________________

I will not agree completly with this ... it's important to have keyword rich site - which means to optimise your site for desired keyword, make it relevant to site content and including it in a few of important places on site (meta tags, headers, alt tags, links and often as possible in content)... Also, there is some secrets or tricks how to get to the top of SE results but I found that those tricks don't work for every webmaster ... and every webmaster have found (or need to find) his own secrets - there are many possible combinations for that ... __________________

i agree with both above as they both have a piece of what makes it
but all in all nobody can give you the full whak on SEO its all a game of give it a try if it works keep it if not change it there are basics like meta tags, header tags, img alts, file names, image names, title alts, bold tags, underline tags and table titles that will help but i would say the biggest one is content and updating __________________

Of course all of the opinoins above are pretty much right on. But IMHO also in reality there are no SEO "secrets". This is an intense biz and millions of eyes are on every little change of the SE's and work over time to fathom the algorithms. There is basic agreement on what works as a foundation.
Complete metatags and don't overstuff keywords. True the bigger SE's are ignoring some tags like even keywords and go straight to your text and headings, BUT, metatags are standard and you never know when an SE is going to change policy and many smaller SE's do use metatags. Repeat your title in keywords and description. Be keyword rich in anchor text. Research for keyword phrases, alt tag text for all pics to include keyword phrase variation. Nice descriptive text around the page is also essentially. Once you've done these basics it becomes about narrowing and narrowing the keywords (through research) and text to laser in on a good keyword phrase that is pulling. __________________

When exactly do you submit your site to SE? After lot of content or what?
Or do you wait until bot pick you up? Do you submit it directly to google.com or you go on some directory listings..? __________________

If you've ever submitted your site, the SE's know its there and will revisit on their own. But, some do submit pages after every change, I think its a waste. Instead spend your time building link exchanges with others, updating and adding new content to your site and maybe submitting more sites to LL's and directories. This is the best way to get SE's to revisit your site often, when they know there is a reason to. There is also a metatag to indicate the date of last revision for a page.
http://www.ilovejackdaniels.com/seo/meta-tags/ Don't trip too much in the start over getting SE recognition and search surfers. Try and get traffic by submitting to and working with other WM's and maybe buying some traffic once you have some site content to sell. Good Luck! __________________

I agree there is a debate about just how useful the majority of metatags are or have become over time. But my philosophy on that is that besides many smaller engines using them and who knows what in the future, metatags still are standards compliant and I'm betting that someday they can suddenly become more important (or for example how about the "content rating" so that filters can operate easily from libraries or schools?) If you've got them done, they will be used and maybe give you an overall slight advantage over those that don't but they'll still never beat out a good listing from thehun.
![]() SE watching for those that are into that sort of thing is very exciting and has hardly jumped out of the gate. We'll see aspects added to search and technique that we can't even imagine right now. For example, soon there are 100's of millions of cell phones and wireless devices coming into the net for search. Or Ask.Com's little binocular thingy. The point is, the tech is there for a reason (metatags) you can't ever hurt yourself by using it. IMHO __________________

Hi Everyone,
Cheers for the tips and general heads up. I think from your comments that theree is alot of debate about what is and whats not useful. However, it does look like good old fashioned hard work wins through in the end. Thanks again, Nathan ![]() |

There are definately some secrets, but you won't understand them without understanding the basics. Read all the SEO texts, read that patent google has, then make some independent research.
If you want to make stable site that you won't have to worry about being banned from SE's. Then pay little attention to SEO, just do the basics. If you want to manipulate Google's latest algorithm bugs then you can find such things by monitoring top results or doing some research yourself(planting sites with terms that don't exist and see how they rank... etc etc). The last choice is very risky though. If you find some bug and use it.. Google finds out it has a bug - you will probably get banned. But note that Google patent states that they keep blacklist of spammers. So if you get banned from Google with some of your domain and it has your registration info, then you may be in trouble. So... play nice. __________________

Depends on your incoming linkage, get enough of it and you can come up for any terms you want with no seo effort, if your site has limited incoming linkage then a little tweaking can go a long way:
unique rich text content, titles of pages, out going/ incoming links. Don't waste time going after terms/ niches where you have no hope of obtaining a competitive ranking, search for your target term, look at the pages coming up in the top ten make an educated decision if you think your site could do battle with top ten, if you think not then look at sub terms. |
