Starting a blog... what software to use?

I'm trying to decide between using a service like blogger, or software like wordpress.

My blog will be about a certain mainstream product that I will be looking to sell, and I'm looking for a setup that will enable my blog to grow with the help of community participation, trackbacks, and search engines.

i use wordpress and i also use joomla and love both, but the more i use and learn about joomla, i just like it better. (joomla is a cms, i realize, but has many built in features that blogging software has and i just realized i can create posts and have them show up when i want them to, just like wordpress and SEO is rocking for me more so with joomla than wordpress.

I'd definitely go for Wordpress. It's the best that you can get, and the best part is that it is free. If you need some help with setting things up feel free to contact me via a private message

Thank you, both. I've heard a lot of good things about wordpress... but my hesitation is that if I use a service like blogger I can get some traffic from the site and be part of the community... users don't have to log into my sof tware to make a comment, they are familiar with the blog interface, etc... What's the verdict?

I've just set up a blog with WP, and it went smooth like a warm knife in butter.
I allso regged at thumblogger, wich seems like a fairly good service.

I hate blogging, but have to try, so i figure i should try what most ppl are recomending, and that is exactly those two

Well Wordpress has a far cooler community, that's for sure.
And they also don't have to log in to comment on a Wordpress blog. But that's your choice, you've got the ability to make comments only possiblefor registered users. Wordpress has several thousands of themes that you can choose from, and I bet there must be a few that look way better and are easy to recognize by your surfers. I'd do go for Wordpress. And besides that: You will be free in whatever you do, blogger can always shut down your blog. Because they are partly the owner. And you can do so much more with Wordpress thanks to all the (free) plugins. Once again: go for wordpress, join the rest of the blog world

Wordpress on your own site, defnitely. Control the advertising completely, no unpleasant surprises like your site vanishing in a year's time for reasons outside your control and lots more options

Yea, wordpress is pretty cool, but I'm wondering if I have blog on pay host, isn't that better for SEO than having a blog on free host like thumblogger.com and so..?
