A question to the experienced

As i continue with my mainstream sites i want to ask the guys who know, is it worth investing in a domain name for the majority of my sites? Are subdomains ok?

For example if i was making a site on electronics, could i have (imagine each as a seperate site completely)

lowcostcameras.alexselectronicdomain.com

howtowireaplug.alexselectronicdomain.com

etc or should i really invest in a domain for SE

It depends on the incoming linkage to me, for the example you gave I would just use one domain as the subdomains are all based around the main domains theme. Lets say you want to change theme and do a site on... " bringing wine in to the UK from France " which is totally off topic to the electronic domain, them I would look at another domain, if I knew it was a whole new niche with a diffrent set of keywords and link partners.

Depends on the competition
having a loans site that does mortgages, payday loans, credit cards, and every other kind of loans out there would be a hard slog without massive linkage
