Tutorial: Building a successful informational website

I am going to add on a regular basis to this thread the basic steps to help you build a sucessfull website.

3 Things you should have for this project.
Domain name
Hosting
Digital camera (not necessary but helpful)

To start this project we are going to choose a domain name related to something we are knowledgeable about, like a hobby, sport, game, business, anything that with your knowledge you can create "original content".

#1 Domain name
The domain name that you choose should consist of keywords describing your site, please max. 3 main keywords.

Example;
whatever .com .net .info
gokartracingequipment
treepruningtips
pizzaingredients
fishingtroutstream
chesspiececollector
customcarwax
householdrepair
plantingbabyplants
vintagestampcollection
oldmusicrecords

We have now chosen our domain name we are going to realize a plan and put it into action.
For this tutorial I have chosen "PizzaIngredients.domain"

Step #2 The site map,
So, we have now have our "site theme key phrase" , pizza ingredients.
I love pizza and think I know everything about it so it makes for an easy subject to make content for.

We need now to plan out and make pages for the site with main relevant keywords in the page names.

After our index page we will need sub phrase pages like these;
pizza_sauce.html
pizza_dough.html
mozzarela_cheese.html
fresh_mushrooms.html
italian_sausage.html
anchovies.html

Some other possible pages to add would be

pizza_oven.html
pizza_history.html
pizza_delivery.html
pizza_packaging.html
pizza_supply

Now, for each page that we will make we will need to add your metatags,title,text and images matching your page name.

Good keyword helpers;
I use this link to Google

You can apply this to blogs, and any website as a good solid basis. The rest is up to you to follow through on these tips...

An easier way would be to use a free CMS package such as Wordpress and use a meta plugin.

The advice is good, but gone are the days where you have to manually create pages like this.

No, those days are not gone and a cms is not always the right path to take.

Many of my most successful sites are all basic html Google-god and I do disagree whole-heartedly with your opinion.

The com, net and org domains are long gone, but the co.uks will do for me to sell into the UK.

No not your image, but your websites image and presentation to the search engines and spiders.
This is where your Digital camera or cellphone cam plays a big part in capitalizing on search engine traffic. You must not be a pro to take the pictures we need. Your image content is a integral part of this project, pay attention. Also, this applies to the complete lesson in Step #3;
At any point you misspell or make a typo, ignore it, do not correct it and profit from it. You were not the first person to make that same error and there might be a million more behind you.

For each page you will be required to have 2-3 images, .jpeg format preferrably.

After you have collected your 20-30 subject related images, you will proceed to batch optimize them. Pictures should be no more than 50kb in size when your finished.

Then you will rename each picture according to subject matter. For example;

buffalo_mozzarella_cheese.jpg
red_tomatoe_sauce.jpg
fresh_oregano_italian_herbs.jpg

When you are placing images within your pages the following html will be used. Notice the Alt Tag Text--- This is important. Use good descriptive words and lots of imagination. Again I repeat, if at any point you misspell or make a typo, ignore it, do not correct it and profit from it.

Enjoy snapping awaying !

In worst scenario, you do not own any type of digital image maker...

There are free stock photo image sites available like PhotoTakeOut.com and Morguefile.com - Remember, it is very important that you give credit to author and website for each image.
This is not the preferable way to go, as original always gets you further.
