Anyone ever do a portal for a City?

Just wondering if anyone has done a portal for the city they live in. The town we moved to has a couple of websites. None of them get much traffic and aren't offering too much so I was thinking of doing my own. Something along the lines of having classified ads, forum, maybe some type of calendar with current events, maybe local auctions.

Anyone try anything like this? Anything you can think of that would make a site like this good.

I'm thinking of doing one for my city, or maybe my state, but it would be aimed at tourists coming to the area.

Look for specialty sites catering to your community, if they agree to tarde links you're off to a good start. I know here there's sites for bands, sports clubs etc.

I would have loved to do that in my home town, but with a population of 20 000 & only limited dial up, well it would have been just for fun, non-profitable. Classifieds are always good, try & find some interesting things about the city that isn't well known to everyone. We're doing something similar at the moment, targeted at the people coming from Southern Africa, using our own experiences as a guideline.

Yeah this is not a big city. Population is about 20k. But I have noticed that alot of people that move away or have camps in the area are reading the limited local sites, getting the local paper delivered to them via snail mail. There is alot of tourism here too so alot of camps, fishing and hunting guides. So probably wouldn 't have problems finding sites to link to.

And for the people living in the area having one site showing their weather, classified ads, events calendar, forum, etc (anything else I can think of) would probably work well.

Im doing something just like that now. The city I live in is pretty small, no town website so Im building one with a chat room/classifieds, daily local news, weather, local scool sports scores and pics planning on selling ad space to local businesses, and offer website/page creation for those who are no online already.. prospects are looking good so far
