Pick apart my gallery

Hi all: I've started making galleries as an experiment with my blog posts and submitting them too. I'm concentrating on simplicity with these so bear this in mind. I only want simple graphics etc.

Here's a sample gallery:

Things I already know are sort of wrong with it:

1)It has 9 outgoing links, a lot of tgps only allow 8 or less, this will be fixed with subsequent galleries.

2) Statscounter uses some sort of active x or something i think, so I might have to figure out something there to make it more tgp friendly.

That gallery has already been accepted by probably 100 or so tgps already despite these issues, so I'm looking for some constructive criticism. Or if you like it, what's good about it. I also am interested in the best ways to get sponsor clickthrough from my galleries too. So please pull no punches!

Active X, Flash, or javasc ript are all likely to get you automatically denied by the tgp's software. Seriously, some tgp owners would probably just blacklist you, your ip, your email addy and your nameserver without even knowing they did so. Pull the javasc ript counter. There is no point in trying to submit with it.

It has too many outgoing links. Back when I had my tgp I wouldn't have even considered listing it. Remember, your recips will count as outgoing links to the tgp's you submit too as well. Aim for 3 or at most 4 links to sponsor... for the big guys who like clean galleries use 2 and follow their recip rules closely.

You can create the appearance of more outgoing links sometimes by putting text on two seperate lines or text and an image within the same html anchor tag. You can make some nice effects with this and css, but keep it simple too.

Consider numbering your photos as other than 001, 002, 003, etc. Plan to do somethign with the 404 traffic and number them like 001, 004, 007, etc... you can create a lot of 404 traffic and send it to a cj etc. Don't send it to popup hell with the bigger tgps, and don't do anything outright crooked to it (like trying to install stuff on them!)

You can get better click thru ratios if you can slip a link to sponsor within the group of thumbnails. If the surfer has to mouse over the link they are more apt to click it.

Some basic rules to follow for galleries that get submitted to TGP sites:

*Always read the rules of the sites you wish to submit to.*

• Use a minimum of 15 pictures. 16 is preferred. 16 will pass through all scripts. Do not go overboard and add 20 or more images. 16 is the magic number.
  
  Only 3 links to a sponsor. (Use console free tour links)
  
  Only 3 recips to other TGP sites. Recips must appear at the top of the gallery. Do not add links to your own sites. TGP owners and reviewers frown upon this practice. (Using only 3 recips passes all TGP scripts)
  
  Full size images must weigh a minimum of 43kb to pass through all scripts.
  
  No hotlinking of any image.
  
  No java, Flash, or Active X.
  
  Never use a blind link. All links should clearly state where it is the link leads to when clicked. Some reviewers are very anal about what they consider a blind link. You want to leave nothing up to interpretation when it involves linking. By clearly stating where the link leads, you avoid the blind link issue.

Some tips:

• Use text links. If you use an image, always include text with the image. Text links will get clicked more than image links.
  
  Add a text link around the middle and end of your gallery. These links will get clicked far more than links at the top of your gallery.
  
  A gallery should be designed to get the surfer clicking to your sponsor as quickly as possible.
  
  Content is always the main focus of your gallery. If you can't get the surfer interested in your content, they won't click to the sponsor no matter how good your text might be.
  
  Choose your content wisely. Remember the tease factor. You can also control the tease factor by manually cropping your thumbs should you be given a content set. Manually cropping also works for content sets where it seems nearly every image looks the same.
  
  At least half or close to half of your content should appear before the fold in your page. Meaning that the surfer does not have to scroll to view a good chunk of your content. One way to make the gallery appear like there is more is to use large thumbs.
  
  Larger thumbs and larger full size images work. A good size for full size images is 600 x 800 for portrait and 800 x 600 for landscape.
  
  Do not underline or link full sentences or paragraphs of text. Only link the call to action.
  
  Surfers should never have to hunt for a link. Make sure links are easy to find, easy to read, and clearly state where it is the link leads to.
  
  Use one text color, one link color, and one font.
  
  Choose a color scheme that does not overwhelm the content of your gallery. If you use images, keep them to a minimum. Content is the main focus of the gallery, not fancy graphics and misc images.
  
  Optimize your full size images.

Well other than all their criticism, it's pretty. I enjoyed that when I clicked a link it didn't take me to a new window, it opened exactly to the jpg of that photo.

Panky said damn near everything I would say, so I will just say....

COPY / PASTE Panky's post into a notpad doc, save it, print it and hang it up in your work area!

Aside from that, I'm a HUGE 'fan' of this formula....

Text / photos / text / photos / photos / text

Make sure you use plenty of keywords in the 1st Text area, and also some nice descriptive ALT Tags on your thumbs go a long way too..

i Wish they had a TGP section for all these to be moved to so easy to find, meanwhile I am making a text file of most of Pankys rules, also vdc loki I saved your comments above since they seem very relevant i like the alt tag thing

Some TGPs won't list your gallery if it doesn't have a 18 U.S.C. 2257 statement at the bottom of the page.

I haven't come across any that won't list you if you do. But some require a link to the Title info page, and others don't and might reject your gallery for too many outbound links if it's there.
