Take our word for it, surfers click on well worded text links much more readily than a banner. There are a few reasons but the two main reasons are that banner advertising has been around since the beginning of internet advertising and savvy surfers get jaded to them and actually find it quite easy to ignore them after a while. Another reason is that if the text link is worded properly, it sounds more like a personal recommendation since you took the time to write it instead of just slapping a banner on the page. I like to say things llike "This is the hottest amateur site I've found yet. Click here now if you like real amateurs as much as I do".

One thing about banners. If you do want to use them, stick to odd size banners. They tend to stand out more than the old standard 468x60 banners do.
