Wow this has become quite a popular thread. People love their cameras. So far what I've come to realize is that short from a few miscellaneous features here and there.. everyone has a camera that works pretty good. I didn't read any post (even the person with a Canon Powershot from 5 years ago) say that their camera sucked.

wildwebcamgirls I like what you have to say, but I'd like to add something. I would have to say that the amount of money you spend on your DSLR should be roughly divided by whether you intend to use the camera just for web or also for print, and what size print you will be providing for....

Well it would all come down to what size print media again, but I shoot uncompressed at over 12 megapixel. You also have to keep in mind that your megapixel count has to be looked at in correspondence with what sensor your camera uses, and what lens you are using. I would personally take a a cut in body and megapixel rating in exchange for a really good lens.....

Depends on the size of the prints!
Here is a good tool to calculate what you can get from certain sized sensor resolutions... However, you would need to know the height and width in pixels for the specific resolution. Also, there are issues when it comes to larger megapixel groups of cameras with small sensors, and the lens types. To boil that down a bit, a 6mpx Nikon D50, with a 50mm prime, will kick out a way better image than a 10mpx compact with a 3x zoom. Due to the size of the sensor (less interference from other pixels), the quality of the optic, size of image circle... I could go on all day, but I don't think people would be too happy with me hijacking the thread! |

Me personally, I use a Nikon D200, with the extended battery grips for the size of the hands (and a mag on the viewfinder, for the shite eyesight!), my main lenses, well they are the Sigma 17 - 70 F/2.8, a Nikon 24 - 120 F/3.5 VR and a Nikon 70 - 200 F/2.8, SB800 Flash (x2) and whatever good lenses the local hock shop has in on an F-mount. My backup bodies are a D50, and also a Fuji S2 Pro. And I do not actually shoot any of the content!!!

Strobes off mount, and trigger from the onboard flash (good for something!). With the eyesight being a little ropey, though, I still prefer using natural light, and that is part of the reason I got the VR, just to be able to get a couple of extra stops, before having to bump the ISO or switch to flash.

I've seen some great results with SB800s, a lot of people underestimate their potential especially on location. I have an AlienBees ringflash on order at the moment, super excited about giving it a shot. You ever try ringlights?

I think more important, for me, anyway is either a second D200 body (I cannot get enough of this sized Nikon!) or the D300, and relegate the D200 to spares, and lose the older bodies. |

MountainGoat the D300 is a fucking monster, and I mean that in all the best ways. I have a D200 now as a second body, and the difference between the 2 models is not insignificant at all! You wouldn't be able to direct me to the website of the photographer you mentioned here would you? By the way, checked out your homepage----GREAT stuff man, some great photographers contributing there it seems!
