Wow this has become quite a popular thread. People love their cameras. So far what I've come to realize is that short from a few miscellaneous features here and there.. everyone has a camera that works pretty good. I didn't read any post (even the person with a Canon Powershot from 5 years ago) say that their camera sucked.

Quote:
I'm using a Pentax Optio E30 and I'm really happy with the quality of the pictures it takes and it was really affordable (under $200), I could've opted for something more expensive, but it came highly recommended to me, so I chose it and am pretty satisified with what it does for my needs.
See that's what I like to hear! No reason to spend ridiculous money on a camera to take a few pictures. It's like the whole fridge thing.. You can spend xxx for this fridge, it keeps your food cold. You can spend xxxx for this fridge, it keeps your food cold. A bad ass fridge won't make you a bad ass cook and a bad ass camera won't make your pictures BE bad ass. When I go check out all the digital cameras I do see that you can spend some money to get really amazing cameras but I pretty much think every single camera they have there has some potential to be great for someone. If I could I'd buy them all.

I love Canon cameras because they reproduce skin tones very well - better than anything other camera I've ever used.
I've always been a fan of Kodak's color.. but now that I think about it you're right Canon is very precise whereas Kodak has almost unnaturally brilliant color.

I'm thinking of a digital SLR, and would have got a Canon EOS 350D or greater, but I've seen a nice Fujifilm digital SLR lately... hmm, decisions...
At least with fujifilm you won't need to install extra software just to view your pics/vids.. I hate canons zoombrowser. I really love my fujifilm, excellent in every way.

I have a logitech quick cam pro 5000 have to say I love it!
See! lol I've got one too, I don't know what model it is.. I just know it does what it said it would and for a cost that didn't make me cry.

wildwebcamgirls I like what you have to say, but I'd like to add something. I would have to say that the amount of money you spend on your DSLR should be roughly divided by whether you intend to use the camera just for web or also for print, and what size print you will be providing for....

You're so right. I couldn't think of how to put that in words so I skipped that.. but for web makes it easy.. you can use almost any camera.. prints well you'll need a pretty crazy one.. How much megapixel you think you need for prints?

Well it would all come down to what size print media again, but I shoot uncompressed at over 12 megapixel. You also have to keep in mind that your megapixel count has to be looked at in correspondence with what sensor your camera uses, and what lens you are using. I would personally take a a cut in body and megapixel rating in exchange for a really good lens.....

Depends on the size of the prints!

Here is a good tool to calculate what you can get from certain sized sensor resolutions... However, you would need to know the height and width in pixels for the specific resolution.

Also, there are issues when it comes to larger megapixel groups of cameras with small sensors, and the lens types. To boil that down a bit, a 6mpx Nikon D50, with a 50mm prime, will kick out a way better image than a 10mpx compact with a 3x zoom. Due to the size of the sensor (less interference from other pixels), the quality of the optic, size of image circle...

I could go on all day, but I don't think people would be too happy with me hijacking the thread!

Me personally, I use a Nikon D200, with the extended battery grips for the size of the hands (and a mag on the viewfinder, for the shite eyesight!), my main lenses, well they are the Sigma 17 - 70 F/2.8, a Nikon 24 - 120 F/3.5 VR and a Nikon 70 - 200 F/2.8, SB800 Flash (x2) and whatever good lenses the local hock shop has in on an F-mount. My backup bodies are a D50, and also a Fuji S2 Pro. And I do not actually shoot any of the content!!!

Nikon VR lenses are great! You use your SB800s off mount on stands as strobes or just as optical triggers?

Strobes off mount, and trigger from the onboard flash (good for something!). With the eyesight being a little ropey, though, I still prefer using natural light, and that is part of the reason I got the VR, just to be able to get a couple of extra stops, before having to bump the ISO or switch to flash.

I've seen some great results with SB800s, a lot of people underestimate their potential especially on location. I have an AlienBees ringflash on order at the moment, super excited about giving it a shot. You ever try ringlights?

I've tried ringlights, but not on the shopping list, just yet. Make good results, I have to admit. One of the contributing photographers to the site I am on uses them a lot, and his results keep blowing my mind with the lights! Personally, I am kind of taken by the SB200s and RC1 kit, because even though you have the same sort of function as a ringflash, I think you could get some really creative results, as you can direction the flash heads...

I think more important, for me, anyway is either a second D200 body (I cannot get enough of this sized Nikon!) or the D300, and relegate the D200 to spares, and lose the older bodies.

MountainGoat the D300 is a fucking monster, and I mean that in all the best ways. I have a D200 now as a second body, and the difference between the 2 models is not insignificant at all! You wouldn't be able to direct me to the website of the photographer you mentioned here would you? By the way, checked out your homepage----GREAT stuff man, some great photographers contributing there it seems!

Olympus SP-310

Hello all. I've been a member for some time without posting, but this Photography Forum has drawn me out :-)

I use an Olympus SP-310, which is a compact camera, but bulky enough for my clumsy hand. I should have purchased the model with the 'hot shoe,' but the shop didn't have it in stock the day I was shopping.

I mostly shoot out-of-doors or in an indoor space with much natural light, so the built-in flash doesn't cause many problem. I used a Ricoh SLR years ago, so I do miss the SLR flexibility, but digital photography is so wonderful I won't complain. To say 'goodby' to film and the attendant costs and lack of immediate feed back... and to be able to 'Photoshop' my files, that in itself is inspirational!

I photograph mostly local young women in the entertainment biz, for their ads and websites. I am interested in getting some lights though...

I notice that most, if not all images from this camera must be post processed at least a bit to present them at their best. I've studied and practiced design, composition, and the use of negative space, which may compensate for my less than stellar camera.

Canon 30D with Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS lense. Don't ask why that lense. Suppose because my buddy was offing it for a good deal. 430 EX Speedlight. Have considered the Alienbee ringlight MANY times.
