Twan directories via submitter, use smart linking, you link some directories, and some other directories link to you, win win situation!

Generally, I only set up reciprocal links with directories having significantly better alexa ratings than the site I want listed. If its no recip I always submit, can't see a reason not to.

On a serious, handwritten blog you shouldn't use directories at all.

As far as I am aware you can't get penalised for incoming links. So I think its a mistake to dump "directories" into one basket. Google is constantly changing the way they do things and its the spam they are after. This is a question of keeping your nose clean and of trying to steer clear of dodgy sites.
