google sitemap generation: how-often do you?

for those of you using google sitemap on your website(s), how often do you re-generate the map?

i have been slacking on this area of possible seo improvement.. i know that google checks the map, but never thought on the frequency.

Depends how often the site is updated. Usually as a maximum a month/six weeks, if I remember, but depending on how much the site is updated, sometimes every 10/14 days.

i need to review the sitemap functionality, because i just use the access log.

I dont use google sitemap because it is highly overrated and a timewaster imho.

1. add a sitemap
2. submit
3. put on auto-pilot

sitemaps do what they are supposed to do, give a bot an easy way to slurp up your pages.. depending on what's on your pages (content, meta, etc..) is the real factor of it all..

sitemaps are just a small part in the whole seo mix, in my opinion.

hell, in a really simple way of thinking.. the big G' is my biaaaaatch, it works for me to get my pages seen.. if Yahoo has something like this, i would use it as well, and thinking on it now, that's what a "hub page" can be if you update it often and dynamically.

That is right the SE spider to index your stuff, i have my postings indexed and in de cache within 24/48 hours an all without google sitemaps.

Google sitemap is a timewaster imho, but he........ if you feel it is working for you, have a blast

for the bloggers, sure.. a new post is pinged out to listening servers. but, i'm not a blogger (anymore), so sitemap serves me well.

you can write/ping/get indexed.. cool, not shooting that down, but sitemap was not created for that sole purpose.

with sitemap, yeah.. i can dynamically say:

- this is how my entire website is mapped out (with additions and deletions).
- don't try to index these files
- definitely index these files
- frequency/priority of slurping at the url level
- create multiple sitemaps within a single site (if necessary)

and if you're nifty with some coding skills, create a script that builds a sitemap from data input and submit an entire sitemap at site launch.. nothing but options!

hey there modarazzi

i would lean more towards the "asap".. the python script that i use to build my sitemaps, has a (suppress_search_engine_notify) option to disable/enable SE notification upon sitemap update.

although you can give the frequency and priority of individual urls, i think it's similar to the meta tag setting saying how many days for the robots to revisit your site.. the SE's probably take that in to consideration, do some backend processing to determine the relevancy of how often to really scrap the sites.

calling a SE on command would be really cool

i have been fortunate that SE's come to my site quite often due to my frequent content changes.

yea Im going to go through today and rebuild the sitemaps, I also update the site every day, the site has been active just short of a month and I have taken maybe only one or two days off from writing, since the articles are part news part critique part of the importance is for people to find it quickly

it is very easy to create a sitemap. I do it once a month or whenever i make new updates for the site.

Update it anytime you have new content (pages) added to your site. You don't have to re-submit it to Google manually, it will download it when new content is added.
