How Many One Way Links........?

Ok, I have been in the SEO business since around 2000 or so, when SEO was still being developed/discovered, but the one thing I have never figured out (and maybe because I never asked or looked into it), but When doing link building campaigns, how many links do you want to have at a minimum?

I know some of you are going to give me the vague answer of "As many as possible" or " There are never enough", but seriously...

For example, in the Netpond Shop Forum right now, there is a guy offering links on 159 sites for 500 points. SO obviously, that would give my site 159 links coming in, but is that good? and when I mean good, I mean, is that enough links to even make a difference in my sites' PR, or are we talking I need to go out and get thousands or even tens of thousands of one way links coming in??

Someone enlighten me..... Where is Yoda when you need him??

Because of the way Page Rank works its not always the number that matters. 1 Link from a PR9 site will give you a great page rank. 1000 links from other sites won't.

For my blogs. I list in around 20 directories, do maybe 10 link trades and that's it. They generally get a pagerank of 1-3 when google updates. If they have a rank already, add them to non reciprocal directories and maybe 5 more link trades and they normally jump an extra pagerank.

There is no secret formula, its always the quality of the link. If you are not going to do quality links then its quantity and thats why some people have a pagerank 2 blog with thousands of inlinks.

I give my site hard links in any chance I can get and it seems like I havnt touched a page rank yet, it is a bit frustrating

Link building is a permanent process. As others pointed out before me, it's not the number that really counts but the quality, relevancy to the links you acquire for your site.

Link building also involves "n" factors to take into account, but the number of links would be one of the last ones to think about.

Its not the quantity of links but the quality of those sites linking to you. You don't have full control on your IBLs as there are possibility that a lot of sites will link to you if you have a good site whether that site is in good quality or not.

so why is it I cant seem to get a page rank?

Pagerank is simple about the sites linking back to you- if a pr9 links to you - you get a pr7
if a pr5 links ot you a pr3- pagerank has nothing to do with content only who links back to you.

Pretty much- I can get a page that says coming soon to have a pagerank- the pr you would get frm a pr2 would last until they removed your link or if thier pr drops

Pagerank is not based on one site that links to you. Unless that site has a very high pagerank.

PR2 will not always give you any benefit, because a link only passes on so much Pagerank, if that site has lots of out going links you may get no major benefit.

1,000,000 links coming in from PR0 sites doesn't help a bit, but 25 links coming in from PR5 sites would be great???

That depends on what you are trying to do and what value you attribute to PR. It's window dressing at best and has little or no impact on your serp's. I link build to get my sites to the front of the search results for the key words that matter and 1,000,000 PR0 links would be the real deal whereas one PR5 link would be just one more link and nothing more.

For pagerank you need to have some strong links, you will get page rank easy. For gaining rank in Google, you need to get links, but try to get them every month or so. Not in one day all and then nothing for 1 year.

Again, it depends , if those 25 PR5 sites linking to you are linking to 500 other sites from the same page where your link is then they are not passing to you very powerful votes.
Secondly, if those 25 PR5 sites are about religion and your site is porn site, then again those links to you are not very powerful except your site is in nuns porn micro-niche

Why PR? What value is there in PR any longer. It has little or effect in the search engine rankings and as I understand it, it is nothing more than window dressing that can get you into deep shit if you are not careful

All this talk about pagerank means nothing. Pagerank no longer bears any relation to how much search engine traffic you will get. Use pagerank only to determine the credibility of the sites you are trading links with, nothing else.
