keyword density

i have read that if you overuse your keyword it may be considered spamming to the SE's and could possibly be banned. I also read somewhere your keyword should be about 9-10%. What would be a good tool to tell what the percentage is at? Should I be worried about using the keyword a lot even its in all within a written paragraph? I'm just trying to get more information about this, because I would hate to lose work due to this. Could someone elaborate on this subject please!

I'm doing my stuff from 3-7%, but sometimes i got high ranking for a keyword used only 1-2%..

yo jason...i use this E3KWD everytime I whip out some pages. It's an offline keyword analysis tool that gives you the keyword, count, density, prominence and what tags you used for the keywords. The good thing about this is it's free. Here's the link...
