Put your javascript code in external **** files.

Scream : from a SEO point of view javascript is worthless.. but when you see features like this: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1 and you have a portal or an interactive site you can't stay away

I consider adding some Ajax flavor to my sites next months.

It's not a matter of Google reading the Javascript as content and indexing them or whatever. The question is can Google follow javascript based navigation menus to crawl your site beyond that point.

According to GoogleGuy and others, it does try to and might be able to do that with simple javascript. If you go for something too complex the bots may not be able to follow. Plus, other search engines, other than Google may have problems with it as well.

my understanding is that google will ignore it as 'content' ie: it won't index your variable names, etc... on the other hand, if you're doing shit like redirect or other malicious things I'm pretty sure google will detect it...

What about that black hat technique of writing a page full of keywords to get ranked high in the engines, but using javascript to redirect real surfers? Have the search engines caught onto that yet, are they following the javascript to the real page?
