Getting a higher PR with backlinks?

I'm reading about Google and getting a higher PR with a lot of backlinks.

What I understand is that if I have a lot of different domains linking towards my site I get a higher PR. Now I've read somewhere that if I do a lot of reciprocal linking the value of those links for PR is as good as zero because I'm also linking back to them. Is this true?

If that's true would it be better to give them a link back from another domain?

They link to my site A and I give them a link back from my site B?

This would mean I'm giving them a higher PR because I'm linking to them from site B and they're giving me a higher PR on site A because they're linking to my site A.

Recip links does carry some value still but generally it's better to get one-way links to your domains which is attainable through A -> B -> C (your example of A/B) linking or in the blogosphere by writing wicked cool content that people HAVE to link to.

And PR is just a number, I mostly use it to make sure my link trade partners are indexed but just because you have a PR4 doesn't mean you'll rank higher than a PR3 - it's all about age of domain, on-site SEO and the volume of links to your site.

i agree with the PR just being a number. its just an ace you can throw to a hungry poker player, but as far as rank ..the most important thing..pr dont mean crap.
