Drunk Tutorial: Hide URL's in an HREF!

Ever run a site that needs to hide URL's for whatever reason? Yes, this can be used for both good and bad. Hopefully you can discern against the pros and cons against this code and use it to your own benefit.

If you need to hide the URL's throughout your website, here's what you need to add to your website:

<a href="#" ***********='javascript:window.status="link 1"; return true'
**********='javascript:window.status=" "; return true'
onClick="javascript:window.location='URL'">WRITE TEXT</a>

You'll need to modify that to meet the needs of your website. Change 'URL' and WRITE TEXT to match the needs of your site and content. Your links will show NOTHING in the status bar.

I can't think of any practical value for this except for affiliate links and porn sites.

I wouldn't suggest to use this version as it is not SE friendly, there are much better versions of this thing available, just do Google search. Actually I'm sure that such scripts have been posted to this forum cuntless of times

What I do is set up a directory called /go with a htaccess with the lines

Redirect /go/site.com http://site.com'sverylongreferralcode

then I just have to put links to mysite.com/go/site.com

not only does it hide the referral link, it's easier to remember when I want to post it somewhere as well as allowing you to change the links all at once if the sponsor goes under

Use basically the same thing but with PHP.. I just make a file mysite.php, then put it to /sites/ directory and link to it like /sites/mysite.php

The PHP file contains just a simple PHP redirect

But obviously it doesn't hide the link like this js thing does

I usually do not hide referals as I saw in several opportunities SEs ranked them, and I got some signups from that.

It worked for an affiliate of my site, he put up a link to one of my hosted galleries and now most google traffic to that gallery comes through his reflink which is ranked in google.

So yeah it might be a good idea to leave the reflinks as is in some places at least.
