When google looks at site placement for a keyword combination we all know backlinks count a lot

Lets say I am up against another site
I have SEO my site for a keyword combo that they are targeting also
I have 50 backlinks pointing to my site they have 100
but my backlinks contain these keywords in the link text. Theirs are just general backlinks

does Google see my site as more relevant for those keywords, if you were to judge solely on backlinks? or would the other site win because Google says, This other site has twice as many backlinks as you, regardless of link text

It's not backlinks that count, in fact they can get you penalised if Google finds too many and doesn't like the look of them. It's in-bound links with relevant anchor text that matter, and if they don't have a rediprocal link, then that's even better.

backlinks is inbound links, thats what I mean
what do you mean by backlinks?

are you talking about outbound links?

It has 100 sites pointing to it with relevant link text

Lets assume what you said is true, you can outrank 1000 backlinks with 100 backlinks. How is this true.?
You have 100 backlinks that are the correct link text to the keywords you are targeting, and he does not? His are just general backlinks?

I am just trying to decipher how google looks at backlinks, I am sure it does not just say, this site has 1000 backlinks it ranks higher than this one with 400 backlinks.

Coming from sites in the same niche, is something that is often discussed too. As is the importance of Anchor text having to include the keywords you are targeting.

I am sure none of us really know how Google thinks, but there are some general guidelines as to backlinks that I am trying to compile a list of.
Is there any tutorial on this topic?
