The free (and pay) stuff will be either in an avi or wmv format, rather than mpeg. I have a freeware avi/wmv movie splitter and joiner. If your MPEG splitter gave you bad results, it's not just splitting, it's rencoding them.

Use TMPGEnc for Mpeg, and VitualDub / NanDub for AVI. They will split and keep the source vid exactly the same quality.
