(A recent thread inspired me to write this, something I've been meaning to do).

Often, people don't know what niche to promote, and I always say promote the one you know best as you'll do best at that one.

Let me go a few steps further. Know what your SURFERS want. Learn all you can about the niche and why people like it. How? Well, you can do online research. Visit porn sites dedicated to the niche you're interested in. Find surfer forums (this is the best way to learn) and read what people say. Obviously not every surfer likes the same thing for the same reasons, but you can learn a lot.

Now, let me give you an example. Say you decide to promote BBWs, since you yourself like fat chicks. Start going to the various groups (Yahoo, Google, MySpace, AFF) and read what people say. Create a bogus persona and ask why they like fat chicks. Interact as if you're just a horny surfer. Most likely, you'll hear that they like BBWs as they generally have bigger boobs, there is more to love, they like the way they jiggle, they like something to hang onto, or they just find them beautiful. The latter is important. Why?

HOW you promote your site and how you refer to the women is what sells the site. If you refer to the women in a degrading manner and do the same for the men, chances are you won't be making much cash.

"We have the fattest whales you'll ever see." "These fat c*nts are disgusting to look at but love to fuck." "Like to fuck an elephant?" "Look at these desperate men fucking these pigs."

You probably laughed when reading that, but if you loved fat chicks since to YOU they were beautiful, would YOU want to join a site that called you desperate, referred to them as animals (a little too bestial for some men), or degraded them so severely?

If you wouldn't, why would your surfers?

You won't learn everything overnight. Research can take months. But in the end, it's well worth it.

BTW for those of you unable to find appropriate terms for BBW ladies do a quick study of some classic art, Ruben and Botticelli come to mind.
Those are women of substance voluptuous, busty with luxurious curves.
If you look at fertility goddesses you will not find a stick figure in the lot of them, in fact there are even *gasp* bellies on those women whom both men and women in those cultures worshipped, and many men do adore that type of woman to this day.
A curvy woman is seen by many men as a symbol of comfort, fertility and strong sexuality.
You have tons of material to work with even in today's culture where the stick thin is worshipped you can be sure that primal cultural stereotype of the earth mother stands strong, and a sleek sophisticated skinny girl simply can't convey the raw sexuality you can achieve verbally and with pictures of a woman of substance if you put some thought into it.
You can portray a skinny young chick as an object to be lusted after but a voluptuous woman is one that exudes lust and sexuality and you don't have to reach for it.

So wrap your head around that, cause it is coming from a flat assed no chest skinny chick.

Your advice is spot on Pam. It doesn't matter if you're promoting BBW or kitchen ware. Knowing your product is one of the fundamental basics of marketing. Door-to-door, phone sales, showroom, face-to-face, internet ... knowing your product applies to all marketing venues.

Great post Pam, I wish it had a higher thread count. Even experienced marketers drift away from the basics sometimes and need a little reminder.

Yup it's great advice and a great sticky (but then Pam gets me sticky lol)...

As an aside I'm currently struggling with my gay niche...

I'm kinda using the same sales pitch as I do for the arty babes obviously switching it for dudes...

I guess savvy surfers are either reading it and chuckling - here's another straight dude trying to sell us fantasies - or it's a whole different (excuse the pun) ball game...

Guess I'd better get my chaps on and do some surfing

umm... try a couple gay forums flip. That's what I did and it proved to be a real eye opener. Gay dedicated sponsors are extremely helpful too and most have a strong one-on-one presence in the dedicated forums.
