After you get your WPMU installation running properly, you have to know how it operates. Lets cover the basics.

Please know that everything that i will write here is only one of many possible ways, and this is just my conception of a siple sBlog farm.

yourdomain.com - here will be the center of your blog farm. It may have various aims. My idea is to get all RSS feeds from every small blog here and divide them into categories. Also it will be the place where you can get RSS for your sBlogs. People will get RSS with your refferals.

*.yourdomain.com - one of your sBlogs. Lets have a few hundred of them for the beginning. more the merrier

folders in WPMU:

If you have such a hosting as Dreamhost, you will need custom php.ini file. In the next tutorial i will explain how to configure and install it. It will likely to be placed in a folder /cgi-bin in root of your domain

wp-includes/wpmu-functions.php
you may need some tweaking here. As a part it decides what happens when a new blog is created.

wp-admin/includes/schema.php
same as above

wp-content/themes
place where themes are

now 2 directories which you have to create manually

wp-content/plugins
You will place here plugins (they may be from original Wordpress or versions tweaked for WPMU). Those are classic plugins. Each will work separately for each sBlog. Each has to be activated manually for each sBlog, unless you do some tweaking which i will describe later.

also partially:
WPMUDEV.ORG

for example: SEO plugin, google analytics plugin, plugin for feeding RSS, PDA/PHONE optimizer etc.

wp-content/mu-plugins
Place for WPMU plugins. Some of them are plugins for mass controlling all your sBlogs. Some of them are not exactly plugins, but scripts that are processed everytime on everyblog. Don't push here everything, as it will slowdown your farm.

for example: Mass plugins manager, mass theme manager, mass sitemap, mass stats, everything concerning multiuser

That's it for now. Later i will write specifically about plugins which you need for the start, and about php.ini.

Okay, just installed it on my root dir. I've got this message: "No WPMU site defined on this host. If you are the owner of this site, please check Debugging WPMU for further assistance." What's wrong? Where to log-in?

ah man, I am fed up with this. Why I can't just simply login to the admin area? After a fresh install I haven't got any email with password and I've got the same message on my root domain. Enough.

Holy shit, it was harder than I thought. Anyways, it's up and running, time to make some blogs I have had to ask the support to make something apache config and now it's fine
(naked hosting, they are hell fast all time!).

Man, this is my 4th post and not a single response? okay, another question!
So, i just copied the wp-o-matic plugin to the wp-content/plugins directory, and I can't see the "plugins" menupoint on my dashboard! So, how to build an RSS fed blog? And my second one, how to add a different template for every single blog? For example, if I make a new blog I'd like to change it's header image, and some colors. With preinstalled themes I can't do that, cuz if I change the desired theme's header image, it will change all on the blogs which uses this theme. Don't you wanna write a tut about this? it would be a great!

you need to turn on the plugins visible in site admin/options
wpomatic for the new wordpress is fucked up and i dont recommend it. go with feedwordpress

You can just make copies of themes in themes folder and change the header, then combine the themes with corresponding blogs. There is a possibility to automate that i will write a tutorial on that, but its pretty complicated.

Very simple to manage and edit themes...

There is a large theme pack available for free that includes lots of themes. look for FARM THemes on the WPMU site.

Many of the themes allow editing on the individual blog level - not extensive editing but enough to customize. You choose a pic upload and crop using the cropper to pick a horizontal portion of the pic that fits the banner. Then they allow you to customize the color of the words. Anubus, Glorius Day and Seashor are three easy ones. (instead of a pic you can choose a jpg created in photoshop if you want something more)

If you really want to customize just pick a wpmu theme close to what you want edit it and save with a new name and load into the theme folder.
For example take Glorius Day - change the colors, etc... then save it ask Glorius Day New Colors, then choose it.

One caveat - you have to go into the theme admin panel and activate each theme you want to make available to your blogs by checking yes

Thanks for the useful tips guys. I think it's make sense to change a splog header, but maybe I'm wrong. Yeah, using duplicated and renamed themes looks more easier and simple who cares, with lots of disk space

Okay, I have a question about Feedwordpress. How it's exactly works? I've heard that it's updating feeds when somebody is watching the site. Is that true? And with WPMU what is the ideal automatic update time? The default is 10 mins, but I changed it to 1500 mins. Is it important? I just want to save system resources. I don't think sponsors came out with fresh content every 10 mins.

it really works great with WPMU i refresh feeds every 24 hrs. I have now 20-30 blogs, i never have to see anything to update.
