I am a strong believer in social bookmarking sites. However I also expect a DIRECT link with no java or scripts to obscure it.
I expect they ask for a trackback or ping back. Should they instead want a hardlink from me then they fall not into social bookmarking sites but feed aggregators or blog indexes and they become links not social bookmarks and I evaluate them as I do any aggregator or index.
You can call a cow a horse but you can't make it look like one or ride like one and I sure won't pay the same price for a cow as a horse.

Why do you suppose submitting to these SB sites are useful? Don't you think the SE's will catch on before long and treat them like directories? They seem to bring in very little traffic. Although, I haven't submitted to all of them yet.

As you have no doubt noticed I don't hold back much on my thoughts on social bookmarking sites. I bite my tongue when I see bad lists. I only point out the obvious or the most obvious things that I see.
But I will be happy to answer your question. I post to social bookmarking sites (only a few a very few) to jump start a new blog. Period.
There are a couple that provide a small amount of traffic. Of those couple, one jerks the surfer around so badly (or did last I checked) with their traffic trade script that I do not want their traffic anyway. The other is a decent enough list and sends a few hits. Most send little or none as you noted.
However for a shiny new blog those inbound links are a nice thing and gets them spidered quickly.
I am still VERY picky about which ones I submit to because as I have said over and over again a bad neighborhood linking to you does you NO good. I think I learned that from you lol.
You could achieve the same results as this in several other ways it doesn't matter. It is all about those incoming links from good or at least not bad neighborhoods to a new blog.
After a blog ages I don't usually submit to social bookmarking sites. I haven't seen any real benefits from it.
This is strictly a personal opinion and bias and to be taken like anything with a grain of salt.
Like I said there are several ways to achieve the very same results.

Very good post. That makes a lot of sense. And that is a great idea to submit to them only if the blog is young. As I said in the PM I sent you, I only submitted to six of the first eight. Two were bad, so I skipped them.

It does look like you have confused me with someone else. Unless you went by another name on another board?

hey Walrus, one way inbound links are the #1 thing you want for your sites, and social bookmarking provides that

I really doin't see google penalizing them any time soon though, they are far more advanced than a directory.,,and not just that, if they would have to penalize DIgg.com, which is never going to happen

Why would Google penalize you in the first place, when anyone can submit a link to them?
If they did it would be easy to penalize a competitor - just submit their resource to various crappy lists, linkators and so on.
